Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis Selected to All-ECHL First Team; Stingrays Tie ECHL Record
April 10, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, along with the ECHL, announced today that goaltender Jeff Jakaitis has been named to the All-ECHL First Team as determined in a vote of ECHL coaches, broadcasters, media relations directors and media.
Jakaitis, 30, is tied for the ECHL lead with 24 wins, tied for second with a .924 save percentage, stands fourth with a 2.16 goals-against average and is fifth with 2,391 minutes played. Overall, the Rochester, Minnesota, native holds a 24-12-1-2 record with three shutouts in 40 games this season and was named the ECHL Goaltender of the Month in October and December, setting a new league record with four monthly awards in his career. The All-ECHL First Team selection is Jakaitis' second in his career, receiving the honor as a member of the Gwinnett Gladiators in 2011-12. Yesterday, he was awarded the Stingrays' Jerry Zucker Community Service Award for the 2013-14 season.
"Jeff's stellar play was on display consistently this season," said Stingrays Head Coach Spencer Carbery. "He rebounded from a difficult year in 2012-13 recovering from injury and playing behind Ryan Zapolski to prove again that he is a top goaltender at the ECHL level. It's great to see that Jeff's performance has been recognized by the league and from watching him compete on a nightly basis, he is a very deserving recipient."
This award is the third time in Stingrays history, tying an ECHL record, a goaltender has been named to the All-ECHL First Team after Zapolski grabbed the post in 2012-13 and Todd Ford in 2009-10. The Stingrays share the accomplishment with the Alaska Aces.
