Eagles Solidify 6th Seed with Win in Utah; Colorado to Face Idaho

Colorado Eagles News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 7-4, in the second of three games between the rivals this week. The victory solidified the Western Conference's postseason seeding for the Kelly Cup playoffs that begin next week. The Eagles & Grizzlies will end their regular seasons with a final match-up Saturday night.

Utah got on the board first when Adam Estoclet sent a pass from the right midboards to Jordan Clendenning in the right circle for a one-timer five minutes in. Michael Forney -- named yesterday as one of three forwards on the All-ECHL 1st-Team -- tied the game seven minutes later with a top-shelf slapshot from the right circle.

Just as the Grizzlies did on Wednesday night, the Eagles scored four goals in the second period to pull away. Kevin Ulanski made it 2-1 just 32 seconds into the frame by converting on Colorado's first power play of the game. And less than a minute later, Greg Gardner made it 3-1 with a one-timer from the low slot after taking a feed from Chad Costello below the goal line.

Four and a half minutes in, Gardner was called for goaltender interference, a call that angered Eagles Head Coach Chris Stewart enough that he was ejected from the game for arguing and assessed a bench minor, putting the Grizzlies up by two skaters. It took them 29 seconds to cut Colorado's lead back to one when a rebound from a right point shot found a wide open Estoclet below the left circle.

But the Eagles countered two minutes later when Costello scored from the low slot. The goal gave the league's reigning MVP sole possession of 10th place on the team's all-time points list (133) after just 82 games.

The back-and-forth affair continued seven minutes later, however, when Adam Brown was knocked down flat on his back in the crease, allowing Evan Stoflet's shot from the point a clear path to the back of the net. But Gardner put Colorado back up by a pair two minutes later when he blazed behind the defense and put home his second of the night from the slot.

A wide open Trent Daavettila made it 6-3 seven and a half minutes into the final frame when he one-timed a rocket into the net from the right circle. Then, with just four seconds left on a second consecutive Utah power play, Brown deflected a rebound right onto the take of a crashing Berkley Scott, allowing the Grizzlies to trim Colorado's lead back down to 6-4. But with time winding down, Utah pulled its netminder for an extra attacker and Kyle Ostrow put the puck into the empty net to ice the game with a 7-4 score.
