Elmira Triumphs Over Trenton

Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals capped the home portion of their 2012-13 schedule with a 4-1 win over the Trenton Titans. The win broke Elmira's short two game losing skid, snapped Trenton's four game win streak, and improved the Jackals' record to 39-25-7 on the season.

After suffering their most lopsided home loss of the season to Trenton less than a week earlier, the Jackals had revenge on their mind in the first. They nearly took the lead just over four minutes in when Matt Carter had a clean look at the net. The winger tried to rip a shot high to Scott Wedgewood's glove side, but Trenton's netminder snared it in spectacular fashion. The Jackals wouldn't be denied a few moments later, though, when Jordon Southorn stole the puck away on a Titans breakout attempt. After cutting to the middle from the right wing, the Jackals defenseman beat Wedgewood clean to the glove side with a wrist shot. The goal midway through the period was Southorn's 11th of the season. That was part of a 20 shot barrage the Jackals sent Wedgewood's way. At the other end of the ice, Maxime Clermont spiked away each of the nine shots he saw.

The Jackals took to work quickly in the second to double up the lead. Set up on an early power play, Jean Bourbeau received a pass in the slot from Andrew Rowe and sent it quickly to the back of the net for his 20th of the season. Brandon Blandina was also credited with an assist for his first power play point of the season. The Jackals lead was put in peril when Trenton received 1:17 of a 5-on-3 late in the second. But some timely blocked passes and shots from the Jackals penalty killers, and a pair of saves by Clermont, kept the Titans down by a pair headed into the third.

The Jackals saved their best for last in the final stanza and tacked on a pair of goals to salt away the victory. Rob Bellamy joined Elmria's 20 goal club at 2:43 by scoring off of his own blocked shot. Six minutes and 15 seconds later the Jackals capitalized on a Trenton turnover that led to a 2-on-1 between Carter and Rowe. Carter deftly sent a pass across the slot for the slam dunk by Rowe for his 28th goal of the season. Clermont made a couple of spectacular glove saves shortly after Rowe's goal to hold the Titans at bay, but Jacob Cepis broke up the shutout bid at 15:32 with his 24th of the season.

Clermont ended the night with 28 saves and his 20th win of the season. He is the fourth Jackals goalie in six years in the ECHL to win 20 in a season. Elmira ended the night 1-for-2 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
