Durham Get Bats Going Late to Down Tides
July 3, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Steve Clevenger and Christian Walker both homered, but Durham rallied with two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to top the Tides 5-3 Thursday night at Harbor Park.
Clevenger, who was named to the International League All-Star team earlier Thursday, belted a solo homer to right field in the second inning to knot the score at 1-1. After a Sean Halton sacrifice fly in the fourth inning gave Norfolk a 2-1 lead, Walker belted a solo shot in the sixth inning to give the Tides a 3-1 advantage.
The game stayed that way until the eighth inning, when Taylor Motter belted a two-out, two-run homer off of Pedro Beato to tie the score. One inning later, Motter came to the plate with the bases loaded and two out and blooped a two-run double to right field off of Wesley Wright (0-2) that gave the Bulls the comeback win. Motter, who was also named the IL All-Star team earlier Thursday, drove home all five of Durham's runs in the series-opening victory.
Walker's home run extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest by a Tides player this season. Over that span, he's hit .404 (19-47) with three home runs and seven RBI.
Norfolk starter T.J. McFarland turned in a solid outing as he allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work. He struck out three without walking a batter as he lowered his ERA to 3.20 in 10 games (eight starts) with the Tides this season.
The Tides wrap up their homestand Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Mike Wright (4-0, 3.07) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by LHP Robert Zarate (1-0, 0.69). Friday night features a postgame fireworks extravaganza, presented by Liberty Tax.
Notes: The game was delayed 1 hour and 57 minutes by rain and ended at 11:58 pm...Despite the game being played, fans with tickets to Thursday's game can still exchange them at the Harbor Park box office for any 2015 non-restricted home game...The two teams combined to go 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position...Henry Urrutia had two hits and has now reached safely in 18 straight home games.
