Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights dropped game one of their July 3rd, day-night double-header against the Gwinnett Braves 11-4 in a slugfest matinee in which the two teams combined for 15 runs on 31 hits.
With Gwinnett ahead 5-4 entering the seventh inning, the Braves added six runs in the frame to take an 11-4 lead and hung on to take the first game of the twin bill.
The Knights took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Micah Johnson's lead-off double and Matt Davidson's RBI-two-bagger.
Braves top-prospect Jose Peraza tied the game 2-2 with a two-run blast in the top of the third inning off of Charlotte starter Miguel Chalas. The home run was the third for the speedy second baseman this season to go along with his 21 stolen bases.
Charlotte took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth frame when another lead-off double - this one by Chris Marrero - led to another run and a 3-2 advantage.
Chalas would remain in the game to start the sixth inning, but was replaced by LHP Jarrett Casey after the first two batters reached base. Cedric Hunter was the first batter to face Casey, and the left-handed slugger came through with his fourth home run of the season to give the Braves a 5-3 lead.
Marrero cut the G-Braves lead to 5-4 with his second home run as a Knight, a solo shot off of reliever Ryan Weber. The Miami, Florida native led the Knights 15-hit attack, recording a perfect 4-4 day from the plate in game one and falling a triple shy of the cycle.
Weber hurled the final four innings in relief of Smith, allowing one run on seven hits while earning his third save of the season. Charlotte did load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout and double-play sealed the 11-4 victory for the Braves.
The Knights and G-Braves will conclude their three-game series with game two of the day-night double-header at 7:05 p.m. The nightcap will feature a battle of righties as Brad Penny takes the mound for Charlotte against Jorge Reyes. Immediately following the game will be a Friday Night Fireworks show presented by BB&T and 107.9 The Link.
