Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
STREAK STOPPER: In desperate need of a win, the RailRiders left no doubt with a commanding 14-2 defeat of the host Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium on Thursday night. SWB snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak with its best run-scoring output and most lopsided win of the season while Pawtucket fell to a season-worst six games under .500. The RailRiders have won 13 of 16 against Pawtucket going back to last season. That includes 10 straight at McCoy Stadium.
SIMPLY THE BEST: Despite a nearly week-long layoff in the wake of being hit in the head with a fastball, Austin Romine owns the IL's longest hitting streak of 2015. His 2-for-5 effort with a double last night has given him an 18-gamer, suprassing the 17-game run of Columbus shortstop Jose Ramirez (June 9-28). Romine has hit .373 (28-for-75) during his run. Adonis Garcia set the RailRiders era record with a 21-gamer from July 17-Aug. 30, 2014 that tied for the longest in the league last season. Red Barons shortstop Pablo Ozuna set the overall SWB mark with a 27-gamer from July 27-Aug. 24, 2004.
A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS: Starter Luis Severino (4-0) earned his fourth win in five starts with five innings of two-run ball. He made multiple athletic plays defensively, but also left the game up 14-2. In his seven starts, the RailRiders have scored 47 runs (6.7/game). He has received the rotation's best run support and boasts its best ERA (1.96), BAA (.190) and WHIP (0.97).
AIN'T IT GRAND?: Ben Gamel bashed his first career grand slam in the team's seven-run sixth inning. He entered 2015 with 10 home runs in five seasons and 415 games played as a pro. His blast last night gave him five home runs in 71 games this season. Gamel delivered the team's third grand slam of the season. Tyler Austin cracked one to center field versus Charlotte on May 19. Romine did the same at Rochester on June 18.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa posted his seventh multi-hit showing in nine games. He went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, lifting his batting average to a season-best .300. His average sat at .184 after an 0-for-3 day at Norfolk on May 11. Since then, he has hit .370/.424/.500/.924 over 42 games played. In that time he ranks among the IL's best in AVG (1st), OBP (1st), SLG (6th) and OPS (2nd).
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The RailRiders' 14 runs made for their highest run-scoring output since a 16-5 win at Charlotte on July 20, 2014. The 12-run margin created the team's most lopsided victory since a 16-2 triumph at Norfolk on May 4, 2014.
BACK ON TOP: Combined with Rochester's 7-1 loss at Lehigh Valley, the RailRiders climbed right back into first place in the IL North. SWB has lived in the division's penthouse for every day but one since June 9.
OFF THE RAILS: Rob Refsnyder went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk and three runs scored...Since moving to the clean-up position, he is 7-for-16 (.438) with four RBIs, six walks (.583 OBP) and six runs scored...All nine men in the SWB lineup had at least one hit...Shortly before yesterday's game, the New York Yankees announced the signing of outfielder Rico Noel to a minor league deal and assigned him to the RailRiders...Noel came on defensively in the seventh inning, but did not have a plate appearance...The RailRiders ended a six-game losing streak, their longest since a seven-game dip from May 18-25, 2013...That slide started with a four-game sweep at Columbus and carried into three losses at home against Durham...Yesterday, former SWB hurler Manny Banuelos (2011-12, 2014) was named an IL All-Star and made his MLB debut for the Braves against Max Scherzer and the Nationals...He left in line for the win: (5.2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 7K).
