The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (34-49) left the tying run at 3rd with two outs in the bottom of the 16th in a 6-5 loss to the Rochester Red Wings (44-37) in 16 innings on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Nate Hanson's RBI single in the top of the 16th gave the Red Wings a 6-5 lead and proved to be the difference in the game. RHP Chris Leroux (1.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER) took the loss for the IronPigs and falls to 1-3.
LHP Logan Darnell (4.0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 6 K) got the win for Rochester and is now 2-0 on the season.
From the 5th through 14th innings, the IronPigs retired a franchise-record 29 consecutive batters.
Oswaldo Arcia gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot off of Pigs starter Severino Gonzalez in the top of the first. It was the third home run of the season for Arcia.
The Pigs tied it with a pair of runs in the third as Edgar Duran delivered an RBI bloop double and Brian Bogusevic came through with an RBI single in the inning.
Rochester took the lead right back with three runs in the fourth as Eric Fryer delivered a two-run blast; his first round-tripper of the season and Reynaldo Rodriguez plated a run with an RBI double to open up a 5-2 lead.
All five runs were charged to Gonzalez (n/d) who gave up the five runs on five hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Tyler Henson's (4-8, 3 2B, 2 RBI, SB) two-run double in the home half of the fifth scored Duran and Chase d'Arnaud to bring the IronPigs within 5-4.
In the home half of the sixth, Jordan Danks (2-5, 2B, R) led off with a double, moved to third on a single and scored when Chris McGuiness grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to tie things at five apiece.
Wings starter Jose Berrios (n/d) gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking one and fanning four over 5.2 IP.
Lehigh Valley had two on with one out in the both the 11th and 13th innings but were unable to score.
LHP Adam Loewen (2.0 IP, 3 K) tossed a pair of scoreless innings for the IronPigs and extended his scoreless streak to 14.0 IP. RHP Hector Neris (3.0 IP, 3 K) and RHP Juan Gutierrez (3.0 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K) also had scoreless outings for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The Red Wings had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the 15th, but Gutierrez was able to work his way out of the jam by getting Darnell to ground into a force to third to end the inning.
The two teams will begin a three-game set at Frontier Field in Rochester on Saturday night. RHP Aaron Nola (3-0, 1.53) will be on the bump for the Pigs against Rochester RHP Tyler Duffey (3-4, 2.82).
