Gwinnett Stripers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - For the second straight game, the Gwinnett Braves (42-38) scored six times in an inning and whipped the Charlotte Knights (44-37) by an 11-4 score Friday afternoon in the first game of a day/night doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark.

With the win, the G-Braves are now on a five-game winning streak, their longest of 2015. They are now four games above the .500 mark for the first time since June 2, 2014.

Gwinnett had to rally for the victory, as the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Matt Davidson and an RBI groundout by Matt Tuiasosopo off of G-Braves' left-handed starting pitcher Greg Smith.

But the G-Braves quickly tied the score in the top of the third at 2-2, as Jose Peraza slugged a two-out two-run home run to left field off of Charlotte right-handed starter Miguel Chalas.

The Knights took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when a two out single to center by Micah Johnson that scored Chris Marrero from second for a 3-2 advantage.

However, that would be the last lead Charlotte would see, as the G-Braves came up big in the top of the sixth and the seventh innings. In the sixth, Eric Young, Jr. led off with a single and moved to third on a double to left by Adonis Garcia. Cedric Hunter then greeted left-handed reliever Jarrett Casey with a three-run homer to right field for a 5-3 Gwinnett lead.

An inning later, the G-Braves sent 11 batters to the plate in a big six-run top of the seventh. Mycal Jones led off with a double to left and moved to third on a bunt single by Mallex Smith. A double to left-center by Peraza scored Jones and Smith for a 7-3 lead. Young was hit by a pitch, and Garcia lined a double to left scoring Peraza for an 8-3 lead as Young took third.

Left-handed reliever Onelki Garcia came out of the bullpen for Charlotte, and after recording the first out of the inning, got Christian Bethancourt to hit a ground ball to third. However, a hard-charging Young beat the throw home from third baseman Matt Davidson to make it 9-3. A single by Sean Kazmar plated Garcia for a 10-3 lead, and then Jones came up with his second hit of the inning, a single to center that scored Bethancourt from second to make it 11-3. Just as in the game on Thursday night, Gwinnett had an inning with six runs on six hit and sent 11 men to the plate.

The only other run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when Marrero hit a two-out solo homer to left field off of G-Braves' reliever Ryan Weber.

Smith (W, 3-3) picked up the win by going 5.0 innings with eight hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts. Weber (S, 3) worked a 4.0-inning save with seven hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.

Chalas (L, 0-4) pitched 5.0 innings with seven hits, four earned runs and one strikeout. Casey went 1.0 inning with five hits and six earned runs. Garcia worked 2.0 innings with three hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Right-hander Blake Smith pitched 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout.

The G-Braves' 16-hit attack was paced by Peraza, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, a double, a homer and a season-high four RBIs, which also tied his career high in that department. Garcia was 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and two doubles. Jones went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI and two doubles. Bethancourt and Young each had two hits and Hunter went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer.

The Knights were led by Marrero who was 4-for-4 with a solo homer, a double and two runs. Johnson was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
