Dragons Split Doubleheader, Win Series with West Michigan

Dayton, Ohio - Hendrik Clementina delivered two doubles and scored three runs and Stuart Fairchild added a double and triple as the Dayton Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 8-3 in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday night. West Michigan won the first game, a suspended game, 10-1. A crowd of 8,241 was in attendance at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons won two-out-of-three in the series with West Michigan.

In the second game on Thursday, the Dragons jumped out to a quick lead. In the bottom of the first inning, Miles Gordon and Michael Beltre connected on back-to-back home runs with one out. Gordon's home run was his second of the year while the homer by Beltre was his third. The Dragons hit back-to-back home runs for the first time since August 30, 2017, when Taylor Sparks and John Sansone connected.

The Dragons added a run in the second inning to extend their lead to 3-0 when Clementina doubled to the fence in right and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by J.D. Williams in his first plate appearance for the team. The Dragons added two more runs in the third on a run-scoring triple by Stuart Fairchild and a sacrifice fly by Montrell Marshall to make it 5-0.

West Michigan started back in the top of the fourth when Dylan Rosa connected on a long three-run home run to left field to make it 5-3.

The Dragons responded in the bottom of the fourth when Clementina doubled and scored on Williams' single to make it 6-3. In the sixth, the Dragons extended their lead to 8-3 when Jeter Downs lined a double to center field to drive in two runs and close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Adrian Rodriguez (3-1) earned the victory, going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Cory Thompson and John Ghyzel each pitched a scoreless inning.

The Dragons collected seven extra base hits in the second game to match a season high. Fairchild's two-hit game raised his season's batting average to an even .300.

In the first game, which began on Wednesday and was suspended due to rain in the fifth inning, West Michigan notched a 10-1 victory. The only Dragons run came on a ninth inning solo home run by Jeter Downs, his seventh homer of the year.

The Dragons improved their home record for the year to 20-9. They are 7-16 on the road.

In the Standings: The Dragons are 27-25, in fourth place, seven games behind first place Lansing and six games behind Bowling Green, the wildcard leader, in the Midwest League East Division.

Up Next: The Dragons open a new three-game series at Fifth Third Field against the Lansing Lugnuts on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. Packy Naughton (3-4, 5.13) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Turner Larkins (3-4, 4.28).
