Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-2, Thursday in front of 2,021 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Wisconsin (24-30) avoided a three-game sweep, but Cedar Rapids (25-26) still won the series by a 2-1 margin.

Wisconsin scored in the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead. A bases-loaded wild pitch to Gabriel Garcia allowed Joantgel Segovia to score during the first. Another wild pitch within the second helped Tristen Lutz come home.

Jose Miranda pulled Cedar Rapids level, 2-2, in the bottom of the third. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Miranda singled to center field and brought in Ben Rodriguez and Akil Baddoo.

The game remained tied until the Timber Rattlers jumped in front during the sixth. Lutz's two-out double drove in Demi Orimoloye, and Trever Morrison followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Garcia for a 4-2 advantage.

A trio of insurance runs within the ninth inning extended Wisconsin's lead to 7-2. Segovia singled to bring Morrison in, and an error on the play left runners in scoring position. Nick Roscetti scored on a wild pitch while Segovia moved to third base before coming home on an RBI single by Payton Henry.

Nelson Hernandez (7-2) limited Cedar Rapids to two runs over six innings for his Midwest League-high-tying seventh victory. Robbie Hitt added scoreless relief to pick up his third hold, and Rodrigo Benoit finished the contest for his team-leading fifth save.

Carlos Suniaga (2-3) allowed two runs within a season-high four innings pitched and took the loss. Suniaga relieved Tanner Kiest, who gave up two runs over three frames in his Kernels debut. It was also Kiest's first appearance in affiliated baseball since pitching August 21, 2015 with the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Phillies.
