Midland, MI: The South Bend Cubs have finished May with some of their best baseball of 2018. With their 11-5 victory tonight over the Great Lakes Loons, South Bend has now won back-to-back series dating back to earlier in the week against West Michigan at home.

The Cubs continue to receive excellent starting pitching. Tonight, it was from right hander Cory Abbott. Abbott, the Chicago Cubs 2nd round pick from 2017, came into tonight with a season total of 41 strikeouts. He added eight more against the Loons to get to 49 through just eight starts into 2018. Abbott now ties the team lead in wins with four. His record improves to 4-1.

South Bend's bats have come alive on numerous occasions over the past week. With Roberto Caro coming off the disabled list, Manager Jimmy Gonzalez has been able to have more options to insert into the order. This flexibility has helped improve the consistency of the lineup.

South Bend received a career day from 19-year-old catcher Miguel Amaya on Thursday. He led the Cubs with 5 RBI and a home run on a 2/5 night. Amaya's two run home run in the top of the 3rd inning was part of nine total runs scored by South Bend in the 3rd and 4th frames.

Amaya then came up again in the 4th. With two outs in the inning, he lined a double out to center. It was a bases clearing hit for Amaya who drove in RBI three, four, and five on the play. With the combined speed on base of Zach Davis, Jhonny Bethencourt, and Austin Filiere, the Cubs easily scored three runs.

In the top of the 6th inning, the Cubs scored their final run on a RBI single from Christian Donahue that scored Jared Young. With the base hit, Donahue extends his hitting streak to 12 straight games. The Hawaii native and Oregon State alumni has worked his way into the Cubs everyday starting lineup over the past two weeks.

Now heading home after the quick three game set at Great Lakes, the Cubs will open a six game homestand starting with a three game match-up against the Lake County Captains. With their record sitting at 24-28 on the campaign, South Bend will have the opportunity to get back to .500 on home turf.
