Chiefs Early Start Leads to Big Win vs. Bees

Peoria, Ill.- The Burlington Bees (22-29) fell behind early against the Peoria Chiefs (27-24) in game two of the double header, earing Peoria a 7-2 victory. Andrew Summerville (1-0) earned his first victory of the season in his second appearance for the Chiefs, going two and one thirds innings, allowing just two walks, and throwing four strikeouts. Max Herrmann had another quick exit for the Bees in his fourth start of the season. Herrmann went just two innings, allowed six runs on eight hits and finished with three walks.

Peoria pulls ahead early

After not scoring till the sixth inning in game one, Peoria got on the board early and never looked back. Scott Hurst began the game with a walk and J. R. Davis hit his third double of the season, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Zach Kirtley would then hit a ground ball to Leonardo Rivas at short, Rivas would throw Kirtley out at first, but would still get an RBI, because Hurts would score on the fielder's choice, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Peoria would load the bases with no outs after singles from Julio Rodriguez and Matt Fielder, and a Nick Palmer walk. Jose Martinez then stepped up, but grounded into a double play, making Palmer out at second. However, Rodriguez was able to score giving Peoria a 2-0 lead. Then Scott Hurst hit his eighth double of the season to left, easily scoring Fielder from third, giving Peoria a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Bees and Chiefs both have big third inning

Now down 3-0, Burlington needed something to get the momentum on their side, and that came from Connor Fitzsimons who hit his first homerun as a bee to left, cutting the Chiefs lead to 3-1. After a flyout from Rivas, Torii Hunter hit his fifth triple of the season, and Franklin Torres scored him on a groundout to second, making the score 3-2. Kevin Williams Jr then got a two out single, but Spencer Griffin struck out to end the inning. It seemed like Burlington was back in the game, but Peoria swatted the Bees momentum with a big third inning of their own.

Elehuris Montero began the bottom half of the third with a single to right and was advanced to third after a single by Yariel Gonzalez. With runners at the corners and no outs, Julio Rodriguez doubled to right for his eighth of the season, which allowed both Montero and Gonzalez to score, giving Peoria a 5-2 lead. Matt Fielder then got the fourth consecutive hit for the Chiefs on a single to left, scoring Rodriguez, and making it 6-2. Fielder would advance to second on a fielding error by Jimmy Barnes in left, and Burlington would make a pitching change after Herrmann hit Nick Palmer with a pitch. Kyle Halbohn entered the game, and recorded three straight outs, finally getting Burlington out of the inning.

Gonzalez adds one more in the sixth

After a two out single from Montero, Yariel Gonzalez gave Peoria a 7-2 lead on a double to right. Peoria was looking to add more when Kida De La Cruz loaded the bases on two walks but managed to get out with only one run thanks to a strikeout from Bryce Denton. Rivas, Hunter, and Torres would all strikeout in the top of the seventh, giving Peoria the 7-2 victory.

Middle of the lineup comes up big for Peoria

The four, five, six, and seven hitters were the difference makers in game two, combining for nine of the eleven Peoria hits, driving in three of the seven runs, and scored six of the seven runs. Montero finished the game 3-4 and scored twice. Gonzalez was 2-3 with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored. Rodriguez was 2-3 with two RBI's, a walk, and two runs scored. Finally, Fielder was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Looking ahead

Burlington will look to avenge these two losses, when they battle the Chiefs again tomorrow night at 6:30 pm central time. Burlington will be going with their ace starter Luis Madero, who is 2-2 on the season and has a 2.31 ERA. Madero has been untouchable as of late, allowing just two runs in his last 20 innings pitched. Peoria will look to win the series tomorrow and will start Evan Guillory. Guillory is 4-3 with a 3.09 ERA. Tomorrow will be his tenth start of the season, and he has thrown 45 strikeouts this season, while on surrendering 11 walks.
