Burlington Bees News Release

Peoria, IIl. - After a big series victory against the Beloit Snappers, the Burlington Bees (22-28) suffered an eighth inning loss in the first game of the Tuesday doubleheader against the Peoria Chiefs (26-24). Burlington struck first in the fourth, but Peoria tied the game in the sixth, and took game one on a walk off single. Thomas St. Clair (2-2) earned his second victory of the season, pitching the final two innings and allowing just one hit. Eduardo Del Rosario (1-2) had a frustrating game, blowing his second save and losing his second game of the season, giving up two runs on three hits.

Bees get ahead in the fourth

Spencer Griffin finally gave the Bees some momentum with a one out double in the fourth inning. Next batter Julio Garcia would draw a walk, giving the Bees runners on first and second. Griffin and Garcia would then advance on a throwing error by Chiefs catcher Dennis Ortega, putting runners on second and third. Jimmy Barnes would then hit a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.

Chiefs tie it in the sixth

Burlington looked to be on their way to a shutout victory, but Peoria changed that right away in the bottom of the sixth. Scott Hurst lead off the inning with his seventh double of the season, giving Peoria their first runner in scoring position since the second inning. Irving Lopez would quickly advance Hurst to third on a single to center, giving Peoria runners on first and third with no outs. After a strikeout from Zach Kirtley, Burlington looked like they were going to get out of the inning when Yariel Gonzalez hit a ground ball to Leonardo Rivas at short. Burlington got Lopez out at second, but Gonzalez managed to beat the throw to first, allowing Hurts to score, tying the game at 1-1.

Another frustrating loss in extra innings

Bees started the inning with Torii Hunter at third, but a pop up to first by Franklin Torres, and a strikeout from Keinner Pina quickly gave the Bees two outs. Hunter would take off to third on a steal attempt, and would be successful, snagging his 14th steal of the season. Unfortunately, Kevin Williams Jr would get called out on strikes, giving the Bees no runs.

Peoria would have pinch runner J. R. Davis begin at second base for Matt Fielder. After a pop out bunt attempt from Jose Martinez, Scott Hurst would win it all for Peoria on a single to center, giving Peoria a 2-1 win.

Two big players were the difference for Peoria

Two performances really stood out in the first game, Scott Hurst and Alex Fagalde. Hurst was 3-4 and had the game winning RBI single in the eighth inning and is now hitting .299 on the season. Fagalde started his third game for Peoria, and went six innings, allowing no earned runs, four hits, and recording nine strikeouts. Fagalde now has an ERA of 2.12 on the season in seventeen innings pitched this season.
