Burlington Manages Just Two Hits in Shutout Loss to Peoria

Peoria, Ill. - It was another rough offensive game for the Burlington Bees (22-30), as the Peoria Chiefs (28-24) allowed just two hits in their 5-0 victory. Peoria took control right away, scoring four runs in three innings to start the game. Evan Guillory (5-3 was unhittable in his tenth start of the season for Peoria. Guillory went seven innings, allowed just one hit, two walks, and recorded five strikeouts. Luis Madero took the mound for the Bees but wasn't him usual self-tonight. Madero allowed four runs on ten hits, in just four and a third innings pitched, raising his ERA to 2.97.

Peoria takes control early

Scott Hurst began the bottom of the first with a leadoff single, and advanced to third on a double by Irving Lopez. With runners on second and third, Elehuris Montero hit a hard groundball to short and was thrown out at first. However, Hurst managed to score on the fielder's choice, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead. Lopez advanced to third on the play, and then scored on an RBI single from Yariel Gonzalez, giving Peoria a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Peoria loaded the bases on three straight singles from Matt Fielder, Bryce Denton, and Jose Martinez. What looked to be a big inning for Peoria got eliminated right away, after Hurst grounded into a double play. Fielder was able to score on the double play and Denton advanced to third, giving Peoria a 3-0 lead. Madero would get Lopez to strikeout swinging to escape the second with only one run. In the third, Montero gave Peoria a 4-0 lead on a solo home run to left, for his fifth homerun of the season.

Late score secures the game for Peoria

After the seventh inning stretch, Scott Hurst began the bottom of the seventh by getting hit by a pitch. Irving Lopez then hit his 13th double of the season, giving Peoria runners on second and third with no outs. After striking out Montero and intentionally walking Gonzalez, Dennis Ortega put the Chiefs up 5-0, on a sacrifice fly to center.

Bees continue to struggle this series

With a shutout loss today, Burlington has managed just three total runs in the three games this series. Burlington had just four total baserunners the whole game, two on singles from Pina and Garcia, and two walks earned by Torres. The Bees are hoping Hunter can get things turned around quick. Since his 3-5 game against Beloit last Saturday, Hunter has gone just 2-20 at the plate and his average has dropped to .274. Burlington is also Zane Gurwitz can get back to where he was when he first joined the Bees. Gurwitz is just 2-17 in his last five games and now has an average of .231. The Bees will need these two players to get out of slumps quick if they want to get the offense back on track.

Looking ahead

The Bees will be back at Dozer park tomorrow, as they will play another double header beginning at 5pm central time. Starting pitching has yet to be announced for either team, by Burlington will most likely go with Mitchell Traver in game one, and Isaac Mattson in game two. Tomorrow's double header is due to a cancellation of the Bees vs Chiefs game back in the first week of the season. After tomorrow's game, Burlington will be back home to take on Cedar Rapids.
