Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The West Michigan Whitecaps scored six runs in the first inning and held off a Dayton Dragons comeback attempt as they defeated Dayton 8-4 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field. The loss snapped the Dragons four-game winning streak while West Michigan broke a four-game losing streak.
With two outs and the bases empty in the top of the second inning, eight consecutive West Michigan batters reached safely against Dragons starting pitcher Oscar Castro (2-5). Castro allowed five hits, two walks, and a hit batsman in the inning. The big hit was a three-run double by Jordan Lennerton to cap off the scoring in the frame.
The Dragons roared back in the fifth inning with four runs to pull to within two at 6-4. Miguel Rojas started the rally with a line drive hit to center and scored on Kevyn Feiner's double to left. One batter later, Cody Puckett lined a double to left to bring in Feiner and make it 6-2. Byron Wiley lined a single to right to score Puckett, and Carlos Mendez doubled over the head of the center fielder to drive in Wiley and make it 6-4.
But the Dragons could get no closer. They had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not score against West Michigan reliever Tyler Conn (4-3), who was credited with the victory.
West Michigan scored two runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.
For the third straight game, the Dayton bullpen was forced to carry a heavy load. Andrew Bowman tossed three and one-third scoreless innings without yielding a hit to allow the Dragons back within striking distance. Jordan Hotchkiss pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs. Over the last three games, the bullpen has been used for 21 and two-thirds innings.
Castro suffered the loss, allowing six hits and six runs in one and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Despite the loss, the Dragons remained one game ahead of South Bend in the race for the Eastern Division playoff wildcard slot with 25 games to play.
The Dragons (22-22, 50-64) host the Whitecaps (26-19, 69-46) at Fifth Third Field again Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Mark Serrano (1-0, 1.59) will start for Dayton.
