Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars suffered their 10th home loss in 12 games Tuesday night with a 4-2 defeat against the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 7,408 at Elfstrom Stadium. Kenny Smalley suffered his second loss in three outings, and the Cougars never recovered from a three-run first-inning by the Bandits' offense. The Cougars are 1-5 so far on an eight-game homestand.
Smalley (9-5) gave up three runs in the first inning before settling down. He left in the sixth with the bases loaded, and Scott Deal got out of the jam. Smalley yielded seven hits, walked four and fanned three before Deal posted three shutout frames.
The Cougars got their first run in the sixth against Scott McGregor (6-8) when Mike Spina scored on a triple by Jeremy Barfield, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Then in the eighth, Spina delivered a sacrifice fly off Gary Daley to plate Nino Leyja, which cut it to 3-2. The Bandits answered with a run in the ninth off Trey Barham, and the 4-2 score became the final. Dave Carpenter saved his ninth game for Quad Cities.
The Cougars (21-24, 62-53) and River Bandits (21-23, 51-63) continue their four-game series Wednesday night at 6:30 CT. Anvioris Ramirez (1-2, 4.13) will face Miguel Tapia (3-3, 4.64).
