Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Henderson Alvarez scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings, helping the Lansing Lugnuts (17-27; 43-70) end a six-game losing streak with a 4-0 shutout of the South Bend Silver Hawks (21-23; 48-65) on Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium.

Coming off an outing in which he had allowed six runs on five hits in just 1 2/3 innings at Fort Wayne, the Lugnuts' 19-year-old right-hander was in fine form. Alvarez (9-6) struck out four Silver Hawks in earning the win, allowing only a pair of singles by Reynaldo Navarro and Rossmel Perez and a double by Alberto Diaz.

Through 5 2/3 innings, South Bend's Keny Sosa (0-1) matched goose eggs with the Lansing starter -- until A.J. Jimenez's solo home run to right field to break the scoreless tie with two outs in the sixth. It was the third home run of the season for the Lugnuts catcher.

Lansing tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning against Bryan Woodall to provide breathing room, and Ryan Koch held the Hawks at bay over the final two frames to close out the win.

It was just the second nine-inning shutout of the season for the Lugnuts, who rank last in the Midwest League in team earned run average.

The Lugnuts and Silver Hawks play the second game of their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with Lansing right-hander Joel Carreño (1-2, 2.96) taking on South Bend northpaw Brett Moorhouse (5-10, 3.98).
