South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - What started out as a pitcher's duel turned into an easy victory for Lansing as the Lugnuts knocked off South Bend 4-0 Tuesday evening in front of 4,918 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The game was scoreless through five before Lansing posted one run in the sixth and three in the seventh to defeat the Silver Hawks.
Four runs of support were more than enough for Lansing starter Henderson Alvarez to pick up the victory. Alvarez (WP, 9-6) tossed 7.0 shutout innings and allowed only three hits while striking out four and walking none. The Silver Hawks had opportunities throughout the night but left seven runners on base. Five were stranded in scoring position, as South Bend squandered chances in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth.
South Bend's Keny Sosa started in place of the injured Taylor Sinclair and suffered a tough loss. Sosa (LP, 0-1) tossed 5.1 scoreless innings before allowing a solo home run to A.J. Jimenez in the fifth, which put Lansing up 1-0. Overall Sosa threw 6.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits while striking out seven and walking two.
The Lugnuts put the contest out of reach with three in the seventh off South Bend reliever Bryan Woodall (ND). Lansing loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. One run came home when Balbino Fuenmayor grounded into a double play. Luis Fernandez followed with an RBI single and later scored on an error by Jake Elmore to put the Lugnuts up 4-0.
Alfredo Marte extended his hitting streak to eight, a personal season high, with a single in the ninth inning off of Ryan Koch (ND). Sean Morgan (ND) relieved Woodall and pitched 2.0 scoreless frames.
The Silver Hawks will continue the four game series with the Lugnuts on Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Brett Moorhouse (5-10, 3.98 ERA) will start for South Bend, with Lansing sending RHP Joel Carreno (1-2, 2.96 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
