(Trenton, NJ) - The Portland Sea Dogs (15-14) compiled 17 baserunners and their bullpen allowed one run in 5 IP, defeating the Trenton Thunder (14-14), 5-3 in the series opener on Monday at Waterfront Park. The Sea Dogs have won 4 of their 6 last six road games and moved into second place in the Northern Division

RHP Chad Rhoades (2-0) worked two scoreless frames in relief of starter LHP Felix Doubront (4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) to earn the win for Portland. Rhoades fanned two and allowed just one baserunner - a bunt-single by LF Colin Curtis (2-for-4, 2B) in the sixth inning.

Trenton starter RHP Ivan Nova (2-2) yielded four hits, three runs and five walks to take the loss for Trenton. Nova walked three batters during Portland's two-run 1st inning. RHP Bryce Cox ended the game by inducing a 5-4-3 double play and earned his second save of the year.

The Sea Dogs had five consecutive batters reached base safely after one out in top of the first inning. SS Argenis Diaz began the rally with a single, DH Bubba Bell and LF Aaron Bates walked. 1B Jon Still looped a soft-liner over the shortstop's glove for the games first run. RF Reid Engel drew a bases-loaded walk but Nova got out of further jam on C Juan Apodaca's (2-for-5) 1-2-3 double-play ball to end the inning.

SS Eduardo Nunez led-off the bottom of the first inning by slamming a solo-homer over the left-field billboards. Doubront allowed one hit after the homer, a single by 3B Marcos Vechinacci in the fourth inning, which led to Trenton's second run.

Apodaca created Portland's second run with a lead-off double in the fourth inning. 2B Zach Borowiak moved him to third base on a ground out and CF Matt Sheely hit a sacrifice-fly. The 'Dogs added two runs off RHP Noel Castillo in the sixth inning. Portland loaded the bases and received RBI's by 3B Ryan Khoury on a hit-by-pitch and Diaz on a walk. In the inning, the Sea Dogs had two walks, two hit batters, one hit and three strikeouts.

LHP Dustin Richardson pitched two innings of relief for Portland, allowing one run but held Trenton to 1-for-6 with runners-in-scoring position. Portland went 1-for-10 with RISP and stranded 11 baserunners.

Portland takes on the Thunder in game 2 of their series on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park beginning at 7:05 PM. RHP Junichi Tazawa (3-2, 3.34) takes on RHP Alan Horne (0-1, 6.23). Notes...LF Aaron Bates (0-for-2, 2 BB, HBP) has reached base safely in 20 straight games and was named Eastern League Player of the Week on Monday...Apodaca has hit safely in 5 of 6 games: 10-for-26 (.385)...Diaz is hitting .385 (15-for-39) during his 10-game hitting streak.
