New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Madison Bumgarner made the most of his Double-A debut as the Defenders downed the Rock Cats, 5-1 on Monday night.

Bumgarner (1-0) 19, limited the Rock Cats to seven hits and one run through six innings. The Giants' top prospect is coming off a 2008 season in which he was named MLB.com Class A Starting Pitcher of the Year, Minor League Baseball's Most Spectacular Pitcher, the South Atlantic League's Most Outstanding Pitcher, and SAL Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star.

Bumgarner faced off against Cole DeVries in a pitcher's duel. Devries (2-2) - whose only two runs allowed were unearned - tossed seven solid innings, scattering six runs while striking out six.

An error by Rock Cats' first baseman Toby Gardenhire allowed Bobby Felmy to reach base safely in the fourth inning. Mike Mooney followed with a single before DeVries unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Felmy to score for the first run of the game. Brad Boyer knocked in Mooney with a groundout to shortstop for a 2-0 lead.

The Rock Cats cut the lead in half on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning. Danny Valencia doubled to center and scored on Juan Portes' two-base hit to left field.

Brandon Crawford (3-for-4) started a three-run eighth for the Defenders with a triple to left field. Felmy had an RBI single in the inning. The 'Cats committed two of their four errors during the inning on the same play, with the first coming on a throwing error by pitcher Rob Delaney and the second on a throwing error by Brandon Roberts.

Danny Valencia had three hits for the Rock Cats.
