Chesapeake Baysox News Release

AKRON, Oh. - The Baysox capitalized on two defensive miscues to snap their three-game losing skid by defeating the Aeros 3-1 Monday night in Akron. After getting roughed up in his last start, Baysox starter Jake Arrieta allowed one run over five innings of work to earn his third win of the season, tying him for the team lead.

Akron looked to get on the board early as Carlos Santana drew a free pass to lead off the second inning. One batter later, Nick Weglarz continued his hot hitting against the Baysox by driving a double deep to center which plated Santana and put the Aeros on top. In nine games against the Baysox this season, Weglarz has tagged Baysox pitchers for three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI. After an infield single to Mickey Hall, Arrieta got Niuman Romero to ground into an inning ending double play to quell the Aeros rally.

The Baysox tallied two unearned runs in the third to take the lead. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker walked to start the inning against Aeros starter Erik Stiller. Catcher Guillermo Rodriguez followed with a bunt single, with both runners advancing into scoring position on a throwing error by Aeros third baseman Jared Goedert. Center fielder Dave Krynzel grounded out to score Tucker and tie the game at one. Shortstop Melvin Dorta followed with an RBI single to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead.

They would add another run in the fourth, once again taking advantage of the Aeros mistakes. With one out, right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion reached on the second throwing error of the night by Goedert. Concepcion stole second, and came around to score a batter later on an RBI single by Tucker to make the score 3-1. Tucker finished the night 2-2 with a walk and his team leading eighth stolen base of the season.

Arrieta settled down after the second inning, allowing just one in his final three innings before handing it over to the bullpen. The Plano, Texas native allowed one earned run on four hits while walking two and striking out six in 5.0 innings of work. Arrieta now has 32 strikeouts in 26.1 innings on the season, good enough for third place in the Eastern League.

Left-hander Chad Thall came on in the sixth and worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Righty Josh Perrault came on in the eighth and worked out of a jam after walking two, getting Goedert to go down swinging to end the threat. Perrault has been a steady force out of the bullpen for the Baysox this season, posting an ERA of 2.50 in twelve appearances on the season.

WIlfrido Perez came on to work the ninth for his fifth save. The Baysox left-hander has been a steady force of his own thus far in 2009, not allowing an earned run through his first twelve appearances on the season while holding hitters to a .143 average.

The two teams will take the field for game two of their three-game set Tuesday night in Akron. Eastern League ERA leader Troy Patton (3-0, 0.95 ERA) will take the mound against the leagues leader in wins, Aeros RHP Hector Rondon (5-0, 1.23 ERA) Game time is set for 7:05.
