Aerodynamics...

O Canada...

LF Nick Weglarz continued his hot hitting yesterday afternoon in Akron's 8-2 victory over Harrisburg, finishing 2-4 with a walk and five RBI. The five RBI tied an Aeros season-high, and the Canadian sensation's bases-clearing double with two down in the bottom of the eighth put the Senators down for good. After starting the year 3-48 (.063), he has hit .379 (11-29) in his last eight games with four multi-hit efforts, all three of his doubles, two of his three home runs, and 13 of his 18 RBI. The 2008 Olympian now sits second on the Aeros in RBI, is tied for second in home runs, and ranks fourth in walks.

Anything You Can Do...

CF Jose Constanza and 1B Beau Mills continued their recent tit-for-tat yesterday afternoon, as Constanza went 2-5 for his 10th multi-hit game this year while Mills finished 2-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored to notch his ninth multi-hit game. Mills, who started the year in a 3-21 slump and even shaved his head in an effort to reverse his mojo, is hitting .310 since to raise his average to .276 on the year to go with one home run and 13 RBI. The native of Visalia, CA also leads the Aeros with seven doubles and has made only one error while appearing in all 27 games at first base this season.

Big Swede Strikes Again...

Starter Chuck Lofgren turned in another fantastic start yesterday, going six innings and allowing only two hits, one run and two walks while striking out a pair. It was the second win for the left-hander and his third quality start, tying the promoted Frank Herrmann for the team-high. Lofgren remained fourth in the Eastern League with a 1.33 ERA, and Akron is now 5-0 when he starts a game this season. He has yet to allow more than one run or surrender more than four hits in any of his starts, and is limiting opponents to a .130 batting average.

Pitching Leads the Way...

The quality start by Lofgren yesterday was the 12th by Aeros pitchers this season in only 27 games played. Akron had just seven quality starts through 27 games last season, and the pitching staff had a collective 4.60 ERA as the Aeros limped out to a record of 12-15. The pitching staff has helped turn things around this season though, as Akron has the best record in all of professional baseball at 22-5 and the Aeros currently lead the Eastern League with a 2.90 team ERA, with the starters going a combined 15-3 with a stellar 2.48 ERA.

Randy Time...

RHP Randy Newsom is back with the Aeros for the second time this season, coming down from Class AAA Columbus after RHP Michael Finocchi was released. Newsom, the club's single-season and career saves leader, went 2-0 with one save and a 1.08 ERA in six relief outings for Akron at the start of the year. He appeared in just two games for Columbus, allowing one run and three hits in 1.2 innings (5.40 ERA). Finocchi was coming back from an ankle injury that cost him almost all of 2008, as he was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in five outings for Akron. He had not pitched since April 30th.
