Connecticut Defenders News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT- The Defenders continued their winning ways Monday night at New Britain Stadium as Connecticut defeated their interstate rival the New Britain Rock Cats by the final of 5-1 for their third straight victory.
The Defenders took advantage of four Rock Cats errors in the ballgame, two in the fourth to plate two runs and the other two errors in the eighth to score three runs, was all Connecticut needed to seal the deal.
The Giants No. 1 rated prospect (Baseball America), LHP-Madison Bumgarner (1-0) toed the rubber in his double-A debut and just like his teammate Tim Alderson managed a win. Bumgarner allowed seven hits and one earned run over six innings of work and struck out a pair.
Connecticut got out in front in the fourth inning when LF-Bobby Felmy reached on a 1B-Toby Gardenhire fielding error. A single by CF-Mike Mooney put runners on the corners. Felmy would score on a wild pitch from Rock Cat's starter, RHP-Cole Devries and Mooney followed on a throwing error by SS-Yancarlos Ortiz to give the Defenders a 2-0 advantage.
New Britain responded in the bottom half of the inning with back to back doubles by 3B-Danny Valencia and RF-Juan Portes to trim the lead in half, 2-1.
The Defenders added some insurance runs in the eighth inning. SS-Brandon Crawford hit a one out triple then DH-Tyler LaTorre walked to place runners on the corners. Felmy delivered an RBI single which scored Crawford then Mooney chopped one back to the pitcher Delanay who fired a wild throw into centerfield. LaTorre scored on the throwing error and Mooney raced all the way from first as the throw for center field was wide of Valencia at third and the Defenders had a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Devries (2-2) suffered his second loss of the year giving up six hits, two unearned runs, walked one and struck out six over seven innings.
