
Trenton Falls To Portland 5-3 On Monday Night

(Trenton, NJ)- Portland's bullpen held Trenton to just one run over five innings as the Sea Dogs defeated the Thunder 5-3 on Monday night from Waterfront Park. Portland's victory snapped Trenton's three-game winning streak.
Down 2-0 in the first inning, Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez drilled a lead-off home run off of Portland Starting Pitcher LHP Felix Doubront. The home run was Nunez's first of the season. The last Thunder player to hit a lead-off home run was Gabe Lopez (August 5, 2006) vs. Bowie. Nunez extended his hitting streak to 11 games with the home run. Portland increased its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Center fielder Matt Sheely. Trenton got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error by Portland Third baseman Ryan Khoury.
Portland (15-14) added two runs in the sixth inning off of Thunder Reliever Noel Castillo. Castillo hit Khoury with the bases loaded to force in a run to make it 4-2. Portland Shortstop Argenis Diaz then walked with the bases loaded to increase the lead to 5-2. Trenton (14-14) inched closer in the seventh inning on an RBI double by James Cooper off of Portland Reliever Dustin Richardson to cut the Portland lead to 5-3. With the base-hit by Cooper, he extended his on-base streak to 15 games. But the Thunder could not close any further as Portland Reliever Bryce Cox pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova (2-2) took the loss. He allowed four hits and three runs in five innings. He walked five and struck out one. Nova has 11 walks in his last two starts. Portland Starting Pitcher Felix Doubront received a no-decision. He allowed two hits and two runs in four innings. Portland Reliever Chad Rhoades (2-0) picked up the win by going two shutout innings. Thunder Reliever Jonathan Hovis pitched three shutout innings in his Thunder debut. Hovis struck out four. Trenton's pitching staff walked seven batters and hit four batters in the loss. Carlos Mendoza had his first two-hit game of the season for Thunder.
Trenton continues its three-game series on Tuesday night against Portland. RHP Alan Horne (0-1, 6.23) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Junichi Tazawa (3-2, 3.34). Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
