Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending May 10th:

Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Aaron Bates has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 10th. The 6'4", 232 lb. slugger had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .520 (13-for-25) with four doubles, one home run, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, two walks and a .800 slugging percentage in six games during the week. Bates, who is a native of Manhattan, New York, reached base at least once in each of the six games he played in last week and has reached base in 19 straight games for the Sea Dogs, which ties him for the second longest streak in the league this season. He also had multiple hits in five of the six games he played in during the week, including a 4-for-5 performance with one double, two RBI and one run scored in a 9-7 loss at Binghamton last Thursday. With his performance last week the 25-year old raised his batting average over 50 points to .359, which ranks third in the league. He is also tied for second in the league in hits (37), tied for third in runs scored (21) and ranked 10th in total bases (51). Aaron, who batted .276 with 26 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 68 RBI and 61 runs scored in 124 games with the Sea Dogs last season, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of North Carolina State University.

Vance Worley, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 10th. The 21-year old made a pair of starts for the R-Phils last week and went 1-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings pitched. Worley, who is a native of Sacramento, California, made his first appearance of the week last Monday night at Dodd Stadium and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out seven Connecticut batters. He earned a no-decision in the game, which Reading won 4-2. In his second start of the week the 6'2", 200 lb. hurler surrendered just one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings to earn a win in a 2-1 victory over Altoona at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Worley struck out six batters in the win to push his season total to 34, which ranks second in the league. He is also ranked among the league leaders in innings pitched (38.1-1st), WHIP (0.86-2nd), wins (3-tied 6th) and ERA (2.11-7th). Vance, who combined to post a record of 3-2 with 61 strikeouts and a 2.48 ERA while making his professional debut with the Williamsport Crosscutters and Lakewood BlueClaws last season, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft out of Long Beach State University.
