Devils Erase Three-Goal Deficit in Shootout Loss to Penguns

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Devils erased a three-goal deficit to force overtime, but, eventually fell to the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 5-4, in a shootout in front of a sellout crowd. The sellout crowd was the fifth for the Devils this season inside the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Jarred Tinordi gave the Penguins an early 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the year. Zach Trotman found Tinordi at the left point and his shot sailed through traffic and by the shoulder of goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood just 1:14 into the game for the lead.

Binghamton's Jacob MacDonald answered right back to the game at one goal at the 3:24 mark of the opening frame. John Quenneville fed MacDonald in the right circle and his quick release beat goaltender Michael Leighton for his 17th of the year and team-leading 49th point with assists from Quenneville and Blake Speers.

After forcing a turnover with the Devils stepping up on a rush, the Penguins took the lead back later in the first period as Joseph Cramarossa ripped a shot off the cross bar and in for the 2-1 lead. The goal was Cramarossa's eighth of the year from Jean-Sebastian Dea and Tinordi to take the one-goal advantage into the first intermission.

Just 6:37 into the second period, Andrey Pedan's shot from the point beat Blackwood on the power play for a 3-1 Penguins' lead. The goal was Pedan's eighth of the year from Lukas Bengtsso and Ryan Haggerty.

Garrett Wilson gave the Penguins a three-goal lead with a shot from the point by Pedan that deflected in under the cross bar at 13:39 of the second. The goal was Wilson's 15th of the year from Pedan and Daniel Sprong to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 4-1 lead over the Devils.

Binghamton answered back with a power-play goal to pull within two courtesy of Nick Lappin's team-leading 29th goal of the year. Quenneville fed Bracken Kearns who found Lappin in front of the net for the goal with just 0:28 left in the period. The Devils trailed 4-2 heading into the third period despite a 26-24 advantage in shots.

Binghamton scored two more goals in the third period to tie the game and eventually force extra time. Blake Speers went top shelf for his ninth of the year just 2:22 into the third to pull the Devils within one. Mario Lucia electrified the crowd, tying the game at four on his ninth of the year with 9:31 left in regulation to force overtime.

In the eighth round of the shootout, Garrett Wilson provided the eventual winner for the Penguins, 5-4. Blackwood stopped 27 of 31 in the loss while Leighton denied 37 of 41 in the win.
