Pollock Helps Heat to Big Road Win over Manitoba 3-1

March 24, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Stockton Heat News Release

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA. - Brett Pollock recorded his third multi-point game of the season and Jon Gillies made 29 saves as the Heat bounced back and earned the 3-1 win over the Manitoba Moose at Bell MTS Place on Saturday night. The Heat thought they got on the board first midway through the first period, but Spencer Foo's apparent goal was immediately waved off due to an incidental contact, goalie interference call. However, the Heat wouldn't be denied and on the ensuing shift, a play on the right-side boards would be played to the net and moved to the left circle where Oliver Kylington was able to backhand one past Manitoba goalie Jamie Phillips to open the scoring. The Heat added to their lead in the second period when Pollock's second point of the night would come in the form of a shot from the slot while skating a man-up that goes off the crossbar and in, putting the Heat up 2-0. Manitoba defender Sami Niku would sneak a shot past Heat goalie Jon Gillies early in the third but it'd be the only one that would get past the Heat goalie. Stockton's Spencer Foo added the empty netter, his 20th goal of the season, to seal the win for the Heat and snap the three-game losing streak and four-game winless streak. The Heat return to California to host another Wing It Wednesday, on March 28 against the Cleveland Monsters for the final time this season at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena. Fans can purchase $.50 wings and $4 bottomless popcorn, along with purchase tickets to both remaining Wednesday games starting at $5. QUOTES

"It is huge. I think you saw the desperation from everyone tonight. We had a great effort from our goaltender on out. All 20 guys were amazing. We need more of that moving forward, when we play like that we are really confident in ourselves." - Brett Pollock on the team effort to get the win

"We had a really good gameplan set in place and we stuck to it, and like I said execution was there and we came out with the big two points we needed. Down the stretch we need all the points we can get so we are going to go home and prepare for [Cleveland] and hopefully we can execute like we did tonight." - Pollock on the mindset heading into the game

"The mentality right now is to take it one game at a time and control what we can control. We have to prepare for that Wednesday game and hopefully we can execute." - Pollock on the importance of Wednesday's game vs. Cleveland at Stockton Arena

"He got in pretty close because he had to settle the puck down before he took the shot. I think [Kylington] went down on one knee, so he only really had farside to shoot at. He got a pretty good shot off, but when you can tell where he has to shoot it, because the other side is taken away, it makes it a little easier, and I was fortunate to get an arm on it." - Jon Gillies on his big third period save on Patrice Cormier shorthanded

"I thought we played really well, blocking shots and executing. I think that was the toughest thing about our last couple of games. It wasn't an effort thing, passes were bouncing around, a lack of execution on our part, and some bad bounces. Tonight we controlled most of the play throughout the game. They put a push on at the end, but our guys were blocking shots, seemingly with every body part, and then we got the empty net goal to seal it." - Gillies on the team effort to get back in the win column

"It was one of those nights where everyone was in for sure. For our team to have success that is how it has to be. This time of the year it is hard to swallow it when guys have an off night. I loved the response from our group, in particular our forwards tonight." - Coach Ryan Huska on the full-team effort

"[Doetzel] found out [he was playing] right after warmups. It was one of those situations were Goloubef wanted to see how he was feeling and he didn't feel like he was ready to go. Kayle is a competitor and he always prepares himself to play. He stepped in and I thought he played with no hesitation tonight. I thought he was physical and kept his game simple." - Huska on Kayle Doetzel's play tonight after being called up from Kansas City on Friday

"They did play the bulk of the year together last year so I think they have a pretty good understanding of what the other is going to do and that might be one of the reasons why it was so seamless for Kayle." - Huksa on Doetzel's and Kylington reunited on a defensive pairing

"We can't overlook the one on Wednesday. That is something that we talk about with being in the moment right now and eliminating all distractions that take away from that next game for us. It will not be hard for us [to focus in on Wednesday], we only have a number of home games left and we have to make good on those games and we want to see that same effort when we head back to Stockton Arena." - Huska on not overlooking this upcoming Wednesday night in Stockton against Cleveland

"Those are the saves that allow a team to win a hockey game. When you look at his whole body of work tonight, there were some big saves that he had to make tonight to get us the win. When you look at his game as a whole, it might be the most complete game I have seen him play. I thought he was excellent tonight and a big reason why we won tonight." - Huska on Gillies play in goal

"I wanted to come in and make an impact right away. Obviously, I had a bit of a tough start to the season, but grinding through it I have found some really good chemistry with some teammates. It has been pretty easy playing with some of the guys I have been playing with. The puck is finally starting to going in now and I want to keep building on that." - Spencer Foo on scoring his 20th goal of the season
