CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated in overtime by the San Diego Gulls in front of 15,290 fans at The Q on Saturday by a final score of 4-3. With the overtime setback, Cleveland is now 21-34-7-3 overall this season and with a .400 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

The Monsters grabbed a 1-0 lead on Saturday when Alex Broadhurst potted a sharp-angle even-strength marker at 8:08 of the first on feeds from Brady Austin and Kevin Stenlund. Later in the frame, the Gulls knotted things at one apiece with a five-on-five finish from Austin Ortega at 15:09. In the middle stanza, Monsters forward Spencer Naas punctuated his first professional game with his first professional goal, an even-strength finish at 9:52, assisted by Brady Austin and Paul Bittner, that made it 2-1 Cleveland. The Gulls again fought back to tie the game at two apiece, however, at 12:00 of the second with a Corey Tropp power-play score.

In the final frame, the Gulls claimed their first lead just 1:54 into the period thanks to a Jacob Larsson wrister, but the Monsters forced overtime with a Jordan Schroeder even-strength score at 16:42, set up by visionary feeds from Nathan Gerbe and Justin Scott. In the extra session, Gulls forward Kiefer Sherwood provided the heroics for the visitors by netting the game-winning score at 2:57 to cap his first professional game in style by lifting San Diego to a 4-3 victory. Cleveland net-minder Matiss Kivlenieks' record is now 12-17-4 following a 37-save showing, while Gulls backstop Reto Berra improved to 16-8-2 by virtue of a 30-save performance.

Next up for the Monsters, it's a Sunday rematch vs. the Gulls with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 3:00 pm on Alt 99.1 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
