Dean Pitches Red Wings to Quick 2-1 Win
September 4, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) Pat Dean threw his fifth complete game and led the Rochester Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Friday night at McCoy Stadium. The game was played at a breakneck pace and wrapped up in an hour and 55 minutes.
Oswaldo Arcia's fifth-inning double and James Beresford's eighth-inning single were the only offense the Wings engineered - and were enough for Dean, who went nine innings for the fifth time in 2015.
The Sox got within a run in the bottom of the eighth when Jonathan Roof singled after an Humberto Quintero double. Pawtucket had a chance to make it a game thanks to Shawn Haviland and Madison Younginer. Haviland allowed just seven hits over 7.1 innings but left with a run in and men at the corners in the eighth. The first pitch of Younginer's AAA career induced an inning-ending double play and kept it 2-0.
The lefthander Dean allowed only five hits all night and beat the PawSox for the third time this season. With the tying run at first after Roof's single, Dean induced a double play that kept the Wings ahead.
Dean then retired the PawSox in order in the ninth to cap the complete game in 97 pitches.
For the second straight night, Deven Marrero made a spectacular play at third base. Marrero, who ended Thursday's game with a brilliant pick at the hot corner, made a running grab of a Xavier Avery foul ball for the last out of the top of the ninth.
The Sox (57-84) will be back at McCoy Saturday night at 6:05 for the final series of 2015, a three-game set with Buffalo. Righthander Zeke Spruill (4-10, 4.19) takes the mound and will be opposed by Buffalo righty Scott Copeland (11-5, 2.78)
Good tickets are available for all three remaining games; visit www.pawsox.com or call 401-724-7300 to get them now.
