Knights Drop 2015 Home Finale to Bulls 9-4
September 4, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Matt Davidson launched his league-leading 23rd home run of the season, but the Durham Bulls used three home runs to beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 9-4 on Friday in the finale of their three-game series in front of the largest crowd in BB&T Ballpark history, 10,731. With the loss and Norfolk's 3-1 win over Gwinnett, the Charlotte Knights have been officially eliminated from 2015 playoff contention.
In the 2015 regular season home finale, the Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of RBI singles from Davidson and Chris Curley. The Knights took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning against Durham, but the Bulls charged back to tie the game in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own.
One inning later, Boog Powell's solo home run in the top of the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Durham a lead they did not relinquish. The Bulls added to their 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Taylor Motter, which pushed their lead to 5-2. The Bulls added four more runs over the final two frames to seal the finale. Corey Brown hit a two-run home run in the ninth for Durham.
As for Davidson, the 24-year-old slugger took over sole possession of first place in the International League in 2015 with his 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot off Jose Dominguez in the eighth inning. He drove in three of Charlotte's four runs on the night.
Charlotte starter Terance Marin (3-4, 2.93) allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings and was saddled with the loss. Durham starter Blake Snell (6-2, 1.83) gave up two runs on six hits over five innings and earned the win.
The Knights will now hit the road and make the trek to Lawrenceville, GA to open a three-game series against the Gwinnett Braves -- the final series of the 2015 regular season. RHP Hector Noesi will get the start for the Knights against Gwinnett LHP Greg Smith. Pre-game radio coverage is set for 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
