Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Jordan Lennerton's solo home run had the Gwinnett Braves (75-66) ahead 1-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Norfolk Tides (77-64) scored three runs in the frame to capture a 3-1 win on Friday night at Harbor Park.
The G-Braves won three of four in the series at Norfolk, but the loss in the finale drops the club to 2.0 games behind the Tides for the lead in the International League South Division and a trip to the 2015 Governors' Cup Playoffs. Gwinnett has three home games remaining against Charlotte, while Norfolk plays its final three games on the road in Durham.
The game was scoreless after four innings, but the G-Braves notched the first run in the fifth inning as Lennerton blasted a pitch from right-hander Terry Doyle deep over the pavilion in the right-field corner for a solo home run (5). It was Lennerton's first homer since joining Gwinnett on July 27.
Doyle (W, 4-1) was otherwise dominant, as he held the G-Braves to a run on three hits over 8.0 innings, walked one and struck out one.
Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins came off the disabled list and made his first start for Gwinnett since August 16, throwing 1.2 scoreless, one-hit innings. He walked one and struck out none over 28 pitches, 16 strikes. Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira followed with 4.1 scoreless, two-hit innings, and right-hander Michael Kohn (H, 2) worked around a walk in a scoreless seventh.
But right-hander David Carpenter (BS, 3, L, 3-1) couldn't hold the 1-0 lead in the eighth. Rey Navarro tied the game with a one-out solo homer (6) into the right-center bullpen, igniting a three-run rally. Christian Walker drew a walk and Rossmel Perez singled, and with two outs Audry Perez smacked a two-run double into the left-field corner.
Right-hander Pedro Beato (S, 16) walked Cedric Hunter with one out in the ninth, but induced Sean Kazmar into a game-ending double play.
Lennerton finished 2-for-3 with the homer, a run scored and one RBI for the G-Braves. The only other hit on the night belonged to Mallex Smith, who went 1-for-4 and stole his team-leading 33rd base of the year.
Audry Perez went 1-for-2 with the double and two RBIs for the Tides. Henry Urrutia posted Norfolk's only multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4.
The Gwinnett Braves return home to Coolray Field for the start of a pivotal three-game series against the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. First pitch on Saturday night is set for 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Greg Smith (6-6, 2.55 ERA) will start for the G-Braves, while the Knights will counter with right-hander Hector Noesi (3-4, 3.51). Dave Lezotte has the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.
The first 2,000 fans through the gates at Coolray Field on Saturday will receive a Hall of Fame Bobblehead of legendary Atlanta Braves' pitcher Greg Maddux, presented by Coolray Heating & Cooling. Tickets are available for purchase by calling the Coolray Field Ticket Office at (678) 277-0340 or by visiting GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
