Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
TWO GAMES AT U.S. BANK ARENA THIS WEEK: The Cincinnati Cyclones (12-10-1-1) play two games at U.S. Bank Arena this week (three in all) before enjoying a brief respit for the holidays. The Cyclones play Thursday (Dec. 21) at 7:30pm against Toledo. The clubs head to Toledo for Friday night's (Dec. 22) contest at 7pm. The week ends with a Saturday (Dec. 23) contest with the Wheeling Nailers at 7:30pm.
IF FRIDAY NIGHTS ARE FOR FIGHTIN', WHY IS TOLEDO HERE THURSDAY?: Elton John's song about Friday nights being for fighting leaves the question--why is Toledo coming in this Thursday night? Toledo has been whistled for 32 fighting penalties this season, second-most in the league--while the Cyclones have collected 29 of the infractions, third-most in the ECHL. The teams seem to bring out the worst in one another, having fought eleven times in four games this season. Toledo averages 24.5 penalty minutes per game, the Cyclones 24.4 minutes per game. In the four games the teams have met in thus far, 295 penalty minutes have been dished out (73.8 minutes per game--a 50.8 percent increase over the season average).
PROMOTIONS: Thursday night (Dec. 21) is another 'Thirsty Thursday', with all Pabst Blue Ribbon 12 ounce cans sold for one dollar. Saturday night (Dec. 23) is the 'Teddy Bear Toss', where fans bring new or slightly used stuffed animals to the game. Following the Cyclones first goal--fans throw the animals on the ice. Stuffed animals will be collected by members of the Cincinnati Police, Fire and EMT Dept.'s. The toys will then be used on rescue runs to comfort children.
APPEARANCES: The Cyclones have a full day tomorrow (Dec. 19). At 7:30am, Erik Johnson will join Randy and Dean at 7:45am at Warm 98FM. Following a practice from 10am-11:30am, Johnson and Head Coach Chuck Weber will serve as a guest servers at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraiser at The Waterfront (14 Pete Rose Pier, Covington, KY). At 2pm, approximately half the team will deliver holiday season presents to the children (see next note) at Shriners Burns Institute. At 6pm, the other half of the team will spend time with the families and children of the Cardiac Care Unit of UC Hospital.
GIVING DURING THE SEASON: The Cyclones took a vote back in November and decided that rather than give one another gifts during the holiday season--they wanted to do something different. The team chose to save funds and purchase gifts for children in need in the area. The playing group selected the Shriners Burns Institute as their choice. The team will be providing personal compact disk players and headphones to older children and stuffed animals to younger children at the facility on Tuesday (Dec. 19). The Meijer Thrifty Acres store in Loveland assisted in helping make this visit possible.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: The Cyclones took seven of a possible eight points in the standings during the week, compiling a 3-0-1-0 record. Tuesday night (Dec. 12), Torry Gajda, Mathieu Aubin and Jason Deitsch all collected goals and Cedrick Desjardins stopped all 30 shots, collecting his ECHL best third shutout, in a 3-0 win over Dayton. Thursday (Dec. 14), Sam Ftorek and Deitsch scored in regulation time and Jean-Michel Daoust and Deitsch added scores in the shootout--to take a 3-2 victory from Johnstown. Friday (Dec. 15), the Cyclones scored early, and often, in a 7-2 win over Johnstown. Ftorek and Barret Ehgoetz each scored a pair of goals and Deitsch had a goal and three assists in the triumph. Saturday (Dec. 16), Scott Reynolds and Deitsch scored in regulation time--but Johnstown snuck in an overtime goal to gather a 3-2 win at the Cambria County War Memorial. Chad Collins stopped 23 shots in his Cyclones debut game.
FOUNTAIN SQUARE SKATING SUNDAY: The Cyclones as a team spent part of their Sunday afternoon (Dec. 17) at Fountain Square ice skating with fans and the public. It is one of two appearances the full team will participate in at Fountain Square. There will be another at the facility at a yet-to-be-announced date during February.
DEITSCH FINDS TOUCH: Cyclones forward Jason Deitsch has goals in six of the last seven games and is the team leader in scoring with 22 points (12-10-22). Deitsch, a Cincinnati native, scored goals in three games this past week and had six points (3-3-6) and the game winning goal in the shootout in Thursday's (Dec. 21) 3-2 win over Johnstown.
DESJARDINS ENJOYS WEEK: Cyclones goaltender Cedrick Desjardins had a 3-0-0 record with a 1.33 goals against average last week. Desjardins, who is under contract with the Montreal Canadiens, posted his third shutout of the season in the 3-0 win over Dayton on Tuesday (Dec. 12). Two of the four goals he allowed this past week were even strength, one was with Cincinnati short one man and the other was with Johnstown having a two-man advantage. The rookie from Edmunson, New Brunswick leads the ECHL in shutouts with three.
FTOREK IS FANTASTIC: Cyclones forward Sam Ftorek had a pair of goals in the 7-2 win over Johnstown on Friday night (Dec. 15), his first multiple-point game as a member of the Cincinnati club. The last time Ftorek had a two-point game was a pair of assists for Augusta against Gwinnett back on March 31 of last season.
AUBIN ON FIRE: Cyclones rookie forward Mathieu Aubin has a seven game scoring streak--equaling the club's long of the season. Aubin had six points in the four games last week (1-5-6) and has eleven points (1-10-11) during the seven game run. Previously a fifth round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2005, Mathieu was assigned to the Cyclones on November 28.
DICKMANN'S MONDAY NIGHT!: On Mondays, Head Coach Chuck Weber and selected players will be at Dickmann's Sports Cafe (479 Orphanage Rd., Ft. Wright, KY) from 7-8pm.
