Stockton Thunder News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Stockton Thunder goaltender and Edmonton Oilers prospect Devan Dubnyk has been selected to Team Canada's roster for the upcoming Spengler Cup, lasting December 26th to 31st in Davos, Switzerland.

Dubnyk, 20, is scheduled to return to the Thunder by January 5 (at Idaho).

The 6-foot-5, 209-pound goaltender was selected in the first round (14th overall) by the Oilers in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft, and has gone 8-2-4 in 14 games during his professional rookie season with Stockton, posting a 2.71 goals-against-average (ranking eighth in the ECHL) and a .914 save percentage.

Dubnyk has garnered previous national experience as a member of the gold medal winning Canadian National Junior Team at the 2006 World Junior Championship.

The Calgary, Alberta native was ranked #2 among North American Goaltenders by the NHL Central Scouting Service prior to the 2004 draft and spent his entire five-year (2001-06) junior hockey career with the Western Hockey League's Kamloops Blazers, where he posted an 83-87-14 record, .912 save percentage and 2.69 goals-against-average in 192 career games.

The Spengler Cup dates back to 1923 and is the oldest continual club tournament in the world. Team Canada, who will be coached by Pat Quinn (formerly with Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Philadelphia of the NHL), last won the tournament in 2003 and will open the 2006 Spengler Cup on Tuesday, December 26 against Mora IK from Sweden at 11:15 a.m. PT.
