Cyclones Get Help From Old and New

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones took advantage of goals from two new players and defensive help from an old reliable one in a 3-1 win over Toledo Sunday at U.S. Bank Arena. Forwards Travis Lisabeth and Mike Wirll, both acquired Wednesday from Pensacola, scored goals and goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 22 shots in taking home his third win in three days and his eighth of the year.

The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first 20 minutes, with Cincinnati outshooting Toledo, 9-6. It was the first time in 22 periods (since the second period vs. Trenton on Feb. 2) that the Cyclones were involved in a scoreless period.

The Cyclones opened the scoring in the second period when Mike Wirll slapped home his 34th goal of the season, with Travis Lsabeth and Conrad Martin collecting the assists. The Storm tied the game at 1-1, when John Thomas netted his first of the year at 14:54. Before the period ended, Lisabeth deposited his 14th goal of the campaign from Wirll and Barret Ehogetz at 18:00. Cincinnati outshot the Storm, 12-8 in the middle frame.

The Cyclones scored an empty net goal with 25.8 second remaining to close the scoring and take a 3-1 victory. Dov Grumet-Morris, who had an assist for the second straight game, added the helper on the score.

The Cincinnati Cyclones have had seven players leave the club since Wednesday (Feb. 14), as Torry Gajda, Erik Johnson and Jarred Mohr were dealt to Pensacola for Travis Lisabeth and Mike Wirll on Wednesday, goaltender Cedrick Desjardins was recalled by Hamilton (AHL) on Thursday (Feb. 15). Forward Jimmy Bonneau went to Hamilton (AHL) on Saturday (Feb. 17) and forward Mathieu Aubin was recalled by Hamilton (AHL) this morning. Defenseman Nick Martens was signed by Bridgeport (AHL) this morning as well.

Prior to the game, the Cyclones signed Marc Labelle, who had been retired from pro hockey for seven years. Labelle, 37, is the second-most penalized player in the IHL Cyclones history with 684 minutes. Labelle played four years with the Cyclones (1993-94 through 1995-96 and 1997-98).

The Cyclones are now 26-18-2-2, leaders of the North Division lead by three points over Trenton. Toledo is 25-20-0-1 and is in third place in the North Division. The Cyclones open a seven game road trip on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at Reading at 6:35pm. The club returns to U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, March 9 against Dayton at 7:30pm.
