Reading Royals News Release
Dayton, OH - The Reading Royals (21 - 24 - 6 = 48; 5th North Division) scored a pair of third period power play goals which proved to be enough to defeat the Dayton Bombers at historic Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio, 2-1. Royals' goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (12 - 15 - 2; 34/35) made thirty-four stops-several in spectacular fashion-to lead the Royals to the team's first win against the Bombers in four tries this season.
After a scoreless scrum through the first two periods, the Royals struck first at the 1:49 mark of the third while the power play. Centerman Brett Smith won an offensive zone draw to the left point where Reagan Rome took control and dished to Greg Hogebom, who in turn ripped a snap shot off the top of the left circle that beat Dayton's goaltender Adam Berkhoel to the glove side. For Hogeboom, this marked his twenty-ninth goal of the season and extended his personal point streak to fourteen games (9g - 11a = 20pts). Dayton bounced back with a power play goal of their own at the 9:58 mark of the third. After a sustained and wild scrum around the Royals net, a relentless Yannick Tifu fed Brad Farynuk in front of the Royals' net between the hash marks. Farynuk's quick snap shot threaded through a maze of players and into the goal for his second goal of the year. The Royals broke the deadlock with 4:49 remaining in regulation, when Malcolm MacMillan and Taylor Christie battled on the left wing half wall to dig out a puck and feed John Snowden at the top of the left circle. Snowden stepped into the circle and ripped a snap shot that appeared to hit a Dayton defender and deflect into the net for his ninth goal of the season-four of which have been game winners, including this one.
The Royals return home to the Sovereign Center this afternoon (4:35 pm) when they take on the Wheeling Nailers, immediately after the second annual Battle of the Badges charity hockey game pitting the respective hockey teams from the Reading Fire and Police Departments. Royals' game night broadcasts can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1240 am (and on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com), beginning thirty minutes before the opening face-off. Streaming video is also available for $6.00 per game through the B2 Networks, which can be accessed through the Royals' website.
