Kane County Cougars News Release
APPLETON, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars wasted a great pitching performance by Scott Hodsdon on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-2 against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 4,057 at Time Warner Cable Field. The Cougars scored both of their runs in the first two innings, only to see the Rattlers come back and grab the win on a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Corey Brown's infield single off Nathan Adock in the first scored Larry Cobb to give the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead, and Jonathan Johnston doubled it in the second when his single plated Todd Johnson.
That 2-0 cushion looked like it would be enough for a win, as Hodsdon turned in his best outing of the year. The right-hander, who left his previous start with a lead and got a no-decision, was perfect through 3 2/3 innings and held Wisconsin hitless through 5 1/3. He got charged with an unearned run in the eighth inning for his only blemish and finished with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Nick Walters relieved Hodsdon in the eighth and issued a wild pitch that led to the Rattlers' first tally before ending the inning. He started the ninth but walked leadoff man Edilio Colina and departed with one out. Justin Friend (3-2) took over and fanned his first batter but a wild pitch on the third strike allowed Colina to take second base. Another wild pitch moved Colina to third, and the runner scored on a game-tying ingle by Alex Liddi, setting up the two-run homer to right by Scott Robinson that ended the game.
The Cougars (25-14) and Rattlers (19-19) conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon at 1:05 CT when Scott Mitchinson (3-0, 2.25) faces Phillippe Aumont (2-1, 0.87). Then the Cougars continue their eight-game, seven-day road trip Monday in Burlington, Iowa.
