Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Jerry Gonzalez was two for three with a double and Jay Brossman had two RBI as the Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped their fourth game in a row, 10-5, to the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Clinton got to Kernels starter Robert Fish (1-2) early for four runs in the first inning, including a three run HR by Cristian Santana. Fish struck out six and walked one, but gave up seven runs on nine hits over five innings pitched. Esmerlin Jimenez and Chris Armstrong combined to strike out four over the final four innings.

The Kernels cut the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning on Jay Brossman's 2 RBI single. But with two out and runners on second and third, Clinton reliever Adalberto Flores got Efren Navarro to pop out and end the Kernels rally.

LumberKing starter Kennil Gomez (7-0) gave up two runs on three hits and struck out six over five innings as Flores earned his fourth save of the season.

The Kernels will look to take the final game of this three game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm as Jordan Walden starts for the Kernels. The Kernels will wear pinstripe jerseys in honor of Lou Gehrig on MDA/ALS Day. The jerseys, sponsored by KGAN CBS-2, will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit MDA/ALS. Gates open at 1 pm.

Tickets are available on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office after 11 am on Sunday morning. The current home stand continues through Memorial Day, May 26, with four games against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and then four more games against Clinton.
