Peoria Chiefs News Release

Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs scored three times in the ninth to take an 8-6 lead before giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-8 loss. The loss, their fifth straight, moves the Chiefs to a season-low 14-28.

Trailing 6-5 to start the ninth, the Chiefs came out swinging. With one out, Josh Donaldson singled sharply up the middle and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Spencer Steeldey. Jovan Rosa hit a slow roller to short that Ramon Santana bobbled and threw wildly past first base. As both runners moved up 90 feet, catcher Daniel Lehmann grabbed the ball by the tarp and threw wildly toward the plate allowing Donaldson to score and tie the game. With Rosa on third, Cliff Andersen put the Chiefs up 7-6 when he singled to right. Blair Erickson relieved Steedley and walked Marquez Smith before Mario Mercedes gave the Chiefs an 8-6 lead with a single to center. But Erickson rallied to strike out Dylan Johnston and Elvis Lara to end the inning.

Dustin Sasser relieved Steve Vento to start the bottom of the ninth and gave up a seeing-eye single to Santana. Mark Dolenc hit a grounder to third that Rosa misplayed for the Chiefs first error of the game. Ben Revere's attempt at a sac bunt turned into an infield single when Rosa went to the bag at third instead of fielding the ball. Chris Cates smoked a grounder up the middle that Smith caught on a dive for a highlight reel 4-6-3 double play as Santana scored. The double play should have ended the game, but the previous error brought Garrett Olson to the plate with the tying run at third. Olson atoned for his fifth inning error when he doubled home Dolenc to tie the game 8-8. Chris Parmelee followed with a game-winning single to right and a 9-8 Beloit victory.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead for the third game in a row. After retiring the side on just four pitches in the first inning, Snappers starter Santos Arias walked Rosa on four pitches to start the second. Rosa stole second and scored easily for a 1-0 Chiefs lead when Smith doubled off the left-field wall. Mercedes put the Chiefs up 2-0 with a RBI single to left before Arias got out of the inning with consecutive groundouts.

Beloit got on the board against Chiefs starter Zach Ashwood in the third. With one down, Dolenc walked and stole second. Revere reached on an infield single with Dolenc moving to third on the play. Cates pushed a bunt single to first on the wet grass as Dolenc scored.

The Snappers took a lead and knocked Ashwood from the game in the fourth. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame, Steve Singleton tripled past a diving Johnston and Lehmann tied the game with a solid single to center. Greg Yersich lifted a fly ball to left that looked like it would end the inning. However, Elvis Lara fell down allowing Lehmann to score for a 3-2 lead on the double by Yerisch. Ashwood walked Dolenc and was lifted for reliever Blake Parker, who was able to get out of the inning.

Peoria bounced back in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally of their own. Nate Samson reached on an error by Olson at third base and moved to third on a double by Donaldson. Rosa put the Chiefs on top 4-3 with a double to right-center though he was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

Johnston's RBI double to left put the Chiefs up 5-3 in the sixth inning before Beloit rallied to tie the game. With one out and the bases loaded in the sixth, Olson made up for his error with a two-run single to center. Vento relieved Parker and recorded consecutive outs to escape the inning with the game tied 5-5. Beloit took a 6-5 lead against Vento in the eighth with a two-our rally. Joe Benson doubled to left and scored standing up when Singleton drove a single into center.

Ashwood allowed three runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out two. Parker stranded two inherited runners before allowing two runs on three hits over 1 2/3 innings. He walked a career-high four and struck out one. Vento also stranded two inherited runners before allowing one run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings. Sasser (0-4) gave up three unearned runs on four hits over 2/3 of an inning.
