Kane County Cougars News Release

Clinton, IA- The Kane County Cougars mustered only three hits Thursday night against the Clinton LumberKings and just one after the second inning, losing 8-1 at Alliant Energy Field in the first game of the second half of the year. Nick Blasi's home run was the only run-producing hit for Kane County.

Cougars starter Mike Rogers surrendered an unearned run the first inning for a 1-0 game. Brandon Cashman singled and took second when Rogers misfired a pickoff throw to first. Ben Harrison drove in Cashman to get the scoring started. Blasi responded with a two-out blast to left against Clinton starter Eric Hurley in the following inning, his second homer of the year and first since April 25. The game remained even until the fifth when Rogers walked the leadoff man Kevin Richardson, who later scored on a single for a 2-1 game. Rogers left the game with two outs in the sixth. The Cougars had gotten a break when catcher Travis Chapman picked off Lizahio Baez from third, leaving Clinton with a man at first and two outs. Richardson then drove a ball to deep centerfield that was misplayed by Javier Herrera, leading to a run and Rogers' exit. J.R. Pickens entered in relief, walked a man and gave up a two-run double for a 5-1 Cougars deficit. Clinton added one in the seventh and two in the eighth for the 8-1 final.

Rogers (4-4) took the loss after 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked two and fanned two. Hurley (7-2) got the win for Clinton. Game two of the series is Friday night at 7 CDT. Tony Evans (2-0, 1.32) takes the hill for Kane County (0-1) against John Bannister (4-6, 4.86) of the LumberKings (1-0).
