Four home runs allowed spells doom for Devil Rays

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays allowed four home runs in a 7-4 loss to the Eastern Division first half champion, South Bend Silver Hawks, on Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium to begin the second half.

With 29 hits between the teams, the final was 7-4 because of 23 men left on base between both teams. The Silver Hawks scored once in the top of the second to take the lead before Christian Lopez and Chris Nowak each recorded RBI singles to take a 2-1 lead.

A South Bend home run and two additional RBI singles gave them a 4-2 lead. The Rays came back to tie it at 4-4 on a Reid Brignac two-run hit. The deadlock did not last long as the Silver Hawks homered two times in the seventh to put the game at 7-4.

Matt Larson, who allowed all three runs in the seventh took the loss for Southwest Michigan. Brignac had three hits as well as Francisco Leandro.

The Devil Rays will send RHP Andy Sonnanstine (6-4, 2.60) to the mound against South Bend's Kellen Raab (2-1, 4.91) in a 7:05 p.m. start on a Fireworks Friday and United Way Night. There is limited seating available for this game. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be in C.O. Brown Stadium on Saturday night for another 7:05 p.m. start.
