Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities had a wild start to the second half Thursday, scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning but nearly blowing a seven-run lead as they held off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 16-15, at Fox Cities Stadium. Wisconsin scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth and put the tying run into scoring position before Mike Sillman struck out Mike Wilson to seal the win.

Down 16-9 after the top of the ninth inning, the Rattlers (39-32, 0-1) drew two walks and collected a pair of singles to chase reliever Wayne Lundgren from the game after he retired only one batter. Jaymie Torres allowed a bases-clearing triple to Josh Womack, and the Swing's lead was sliced to 16-13. Swing manager Joe Cunningham then called on Sillman, who immediately allowed a Sebastien Boucher triple and a sacrifice fly, slicing the Swing's lead to 16-15. The submarining closer issued back-to-back walks before striking out Mike Wilson with a sweeping curveball to finally close the deal.

The Swing (37-33, 1-0) jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning, scoring three times before the fans had the chance to settle into their seats. Matt Lemanczyk drew a leadoff walk, and immediately stole second before moving to third on a throwing error. Juan Lucena drilled an RBI single to center field, and Rick Ankiel followed with a two-run homer to right for a 3-0 Swing lead. Spencer Wyman and Jake Mullinax had back-to-back doubles to cap the rally.

But the Rattlers struck back with six straight runs over the next three innings. Yung Chi Chen had a two-run single to give Wisconsin a 5-4 advantage, and then Mike Wilson led off the third with a solo homer to extend the lead to 6-4.

Quad Cities responded immediately, equaling a season-high with a six-run fourth inning. Quad Cities sent 11 men to the plate in the inning, and at one point had nine straight men reach base. Rick Ankiel drew a bases-loaded walk, and then Mike Ferris had a two-run single for a 7-6 Swing lead. A Simon Williams walk loaded the bases before Wyman singled home two men and Mullinax knocked home a run with a fielder's choice. Matt Shepherd capped the six-run rally with an RBI single to left for a 10-6 Swing advantage.

Quad Cities extended the lead with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, as Lemanczyk ripped his second home run of the season and Hayes had an RBI single.

After the Rattlers sliced Quad Cities' lead to 12-9 with a three-run seventh inning, the Swing got all three runs back in the eighth. Shepherd drove home Wyman with a grounder, and Hayes collected two more RBI with a single. Quad Cities scored again to take a 16-9 lead in the top of the ninth, when Williams walked and scored on a two-out hit from Mullinax.

Tyler Adamczyk picked up the win for Quad Cities, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. He beat Randy Frye, who was charged with seven runs in 3.1 frames. The Swing bullpen was charged with a combined seven earned runs allowed in 2.2 innings but, in the end, did enough to hold onto the victory.

UP NEXT: The Swing and Timber Rattlers continue the series on Friday night, as Quad Cities sends Dennis Dove (5-5, 4.20) to the mound against Aaron Jensen (4-7, 4.82). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 6:50.
