Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 23, 2005 - Drew Toussaint hit a two run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead over the Peoria Chiefs that they never gave up in a 9-2 win in front of 2,012 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
Kernel starter Karl Gelinas (3-5) scattered seven hits over 6-2/3 innings, allowing one run, walking one and striking out five. Nick Green and Chris Waters combined to hold the Chiefs to a sac fly in the ninth as the Kernels start 1-0 in the second half, 31-40 overall.
Peoria starter Grant Johnson (0-1) took the loss. The Chiefs scored their two runs on an Anthony Granato home run in the fifth and a Drew Larson sac fly in the ninth. Larson and Aaron Sisk each had two hits for the Chiefs, who totaled nine for the game.
Toussaint's homer was his eighth of the season and scored Sean Rodriguez, who had singled to right field.
A momentary power outage plunged the game into semi-darkness, but it was restored quickly. So was the Kernel HR power as Warner Madrigal and Chris Walston added deep blasts into the gathering twilight.
Madrigal's was his 10th of the season and was a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Walston's was a three-run shot that came in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Freedy Sandoval and Jordan Renz.
The Kernels ended up with nine hits total, six of them for extra bases including doubles by Toussaint and Sandoval and a triple by Alexi Casilla, his first of the season. Toussaint and Casilla combined for five of the Kernel nine hits.
The Kernels and Chiefs continue their four game series on Friday at 7 pm. It will be Center Stage Christmas and Iowa Office Supply Hat Night; the first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free hat from Iowa Office Supply. Following the game, members of the Mediacom Lil Sluggers Club will have their June event; a movie and popcorn on the field after the game. Gates open at 6 pm.
