Swing revamp roster

June 23, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The St. Louis Cardinals made a bevy of roster moves on Sunday and Monday, giving the Swing of the Quad Cities roster a bit of a new look. 2B Calvin Hayes and C Spencer Wyman were added to the team on Sunday, and joining them a day later was RHP Wayne Lundgren.

Along with the activation of LHP Jackson Paz from the DL, those moves filled the roster spots vacated on Sunday when RHP Mike Parisi, LHP Kevin Ool, and 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir were promoted to Palm Beach, and C Brandon Yarbrough was reassigned to New Jersey.

Hayes, the Cardinals third round selection in 2002, spent his first two professional seasons hitting a combined .304 with 22 stolen bases in 75 games for Johnson City (2003) and Peoria (2004). The 21-year-old began this season with Palm Beach, where he hit .215 with 16 RBI and six stolen bases through 51 games. Hayes was briefly transferred from Palm Beach to extended spring training on June 14, and therefore has officially been promoted to Quad Cities from New Jersey.

Wyman, also coming by way of the New Jersey squad, was originally drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 31st round of the 2003 draft. After being released during spring training before this season, he was promptly signed by St. Louis the next day. The University of Oklahoma product spent parts of last season in three separate leagues, having the most success in the New York-Penn League. The 23-year-old hit .275 with seven doubles in 26 games for Jamestown before being promoted to Jupiter of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, where he was hitless in eleven at-bats.

Lundgren joins the Swing from Palm Beach, where he spent the first part of this season going 3-3, 4.15 in 25 appearances as a middle reliever. The Australian native was originally signed by the Red Sox in 2000, and spent his first three professional seasons in their organization before being released and picked up by the Cardinals prior to the 2004 season. For his career, the righthander is 9-9, 4.25 with 100 strikeouts through 83 appearances (six starts.)

The Swing roster is now back up to 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster will follow this release.

UP NEXT: The Swing kick off the second half of their schedule with a four-game road series at Wisconsin starting Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and pregame coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:50.
