Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Norwich, CT) - Connecticut CF Mike McBryde (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) clubbed a 3-run homer and drove in four runs, aiding the Defenders (27-20) in a 10-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (23-24) in the series opener on Friday night at Dodd Stadium. Portland has dropped 10 of 16 to Connecticut this season and is 2-2 on their 6-day roadtrip.
LHP Madison Bumgarner (4-0) beat the Sea Dogs for the second time in six days, working 5 innings on five hits and one run. The lefty fanned three and walked only two. RHP Dan Griffin, RHP Brooks McNiven and RHP Waldis Joaquin closed out the game with 4 innings of relief on two runs (one earned) and three hits.
RHP Ryne Lawson (1-3) suffered his toughest loss of the season, yielding 8 runs on 8 hits in 4.2 IP. Lawson left the game after McBryde's 3-run homer in the fifth inning, giving Connecticut an 8-1 lead. RHP T.J. Large allowed an unearned run in the seventh and RHP Blake Maxwell surrendered a run on three hits in the eighth. The Defenders scored five runs on three hits and sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning to seal their 9th win at Dodd Stadium.
DH Jon Still (3-for-3, RBI) reached base four times with three singles and a hit-by-pitch. LF Aaron Bates had two hits and is 6-for-8 over his last two games. Still gave Portland a 1-0 lead with a 2-out single to right field in the first inning. The âDogs added two runs off McNiven in the eighth inning. SS Argenis Diaz reached on an infield single, scoring Still. 3B Zach Borowiak reached on a first baseman's error plating in 2B Ryan Khoury (1-for-3, BB).
The Defenders took the lead for good with a 2-spot off Lawson in the second inning. McBryde tied the game with a single and 2B Brock Bond reached on a run-scoring infield single. In the fourth, CF Mike Mooney doubled home McBryde, who scored a season-high 4 runs in the win. 3B Sharlon Schoop went 2-for-5, 2 RBI and 1B Brett Pill added a sacrifice fly during the 5-run fifth inning.
The Sea Dogs and Defenders play game two of the series on Saturday night beginning at 6:35 PM from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Notes...Khoury extended his hitting streak to 7 games and leads the Eastern League with 32 walks...Bates picked up two more hits and leads all Red Sox Minor Leaguers in average, homers and RBI's...RHP Richie Lentz fanned three over 1.1 scoreless innings...Large allowed his first run on the road but it was unearned, keeping ERA at 0.00 in 8 appearances away from Hadlock Field.
