Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- A large crowd of 5,425 welcomed the Connecticut Defenders back from the road and the first place team didn't miss a beat as they cruised to a 10-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs Friday night at Dodd Stadium.
The Defenders plated two runs in the second inning and took the lead for good as they picked up game one of the best of three series.
Portland took the early lead off of Defender's starter, LHP Madison Bumgarner in the first inning. C-Mark Wagner drew a one out walked before DH-Jon Still delivered an RBI single to drive him in for a 1-0 advantage. That would be all from the Sea Dogs until the eighth.
Connecticut had a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning before the offense exploded. The Defenders batted around and scored five runs highlighted by CF-Mike McBryde's soaring three run homerun over the left field wall, his first of the season to take a comfortable 8-1 lead. McBryde went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and four runs scored in the win.
Portland would add two runs in the eighth off of an SS-Argenis Diaz RBI infield single and an error on 1B-Brett Pill but the Defenders added lone runs in the seventh and eighth to cross into double digits.
Bumgarner (4-0) picked up the win and remained undefeated allowing one earned run off of five hits, walked a pair and struck out three in five innings of work. Sea Dog's starter, RHP Ryne Lawson (1-3) didn't fair well in his third start against the Defenders as he suffered the loss allowing eight earned runs off of eight hits, walked five and struck out four in just 4.2 innings of work.
Game two's matchup has Defenders southpaw LHP-Jesse English (2-3) up against the Sea Dogs righty Adam Mills (1-2). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm from Dodd Stadium.
Saturday also has former Cy Young Award Winner-Tim Lincecum Bobblehead giveaway for the first 1,000 fans through the gates. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Defenders Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or online at ctdefenders.com.
