Reading Rallies For 8-7

New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release


Manchester, NH---David Cooper went three-for-five with two doubles and two RBIs but Reading rallied for an 8-7, 11-inning win in the opener of a weekend set at FirstEnergy Stadium Friday night.

The Fisher Cats (24-25) started strong with five runs on six hits in the top of the first inning. Brad Emaus singled and scored on a double by Cooper. Adam Calderone singled Cooper in and advanced to second on a Reading error. Nick Gorneault plated Calderone with a single. Brian Jeroloman followed with an RBI double and scored on a single by Al Quintana to make it 5-0.

Reading (26-20) pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first inning against New Hampshire starter Luis Perez. Quintin Berry (3-for-5) reached on an infield single, moved to third on a double by Brad Harman and scored on a single by Michael Taylor (5-for-6, HR, 4 RBI). Kevin Mahar then bounced into a double play but Harman scored to make it 5-2 in favor of the Fisher Cats.

The Phillies cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Michael Spidale, his second of the season.

Reading added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mahar led off with a triple off the centerfield fence and scored on a sacrifice fly by Neil Sellers to trim the lead to 5-4 in favor of New Hampshire.

Perez left after five innings, having allowed four runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out five. Reading starter Tyson Brummett, who allowed the five first inning runs, allowed only one hit working five scoreless innings after that to keep the Phillies in the game.

Facing Reading reliever Pat Overholt in the top of the seventh inning, Quintana (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) hit the first pitch over the left field wall for his third home run. Todd Donovan then extended his hit streak to a season-high nine games with a single and wound up at second the ball was misplayed in left. Cooper's second RBI double of the game made it 7-4 in favor of New Hampshire.

Taylor hit a solo home run for Reading in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-5. He then drilled a bases loaded single off Bubbie Buzachero, driving in two runs in the bottom of the eighth, as the Phillies completed the comeback.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Taylor singled off losing pitcher Daniel Farquhar (0-1). Mahar walked and after both runners moved up on a Neil Sellers groundout, Gus Milner was intentionally walked to load the bases. Farquhar struck out Paul Bako for the second out. Michael Spidale's grounder to third was misplayed for an error by Al Quintana allowing Taylor to score the winning run.

The Fisher Cats continue the roadtrip Saturday night in Reading. LHP Marc Rzepczynski (6-4, 3.74) starts for New Hampshire. The Phillies will start LHP Joe Savery (4-1, 3.49). Game time is 6:05pm and radio coverage begins at 5:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.

New Hampshire returns home on Friday, June 5 to begin a three-game series with Reading.
