Condors Deal for Center

November 22, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors swung a deal today with the American Conference East Division Greenville Grrrowl, acquiring C Krzysztof Wieckowski (KRIS- tauf WI-uh-KOW-skee) in exchange for future considerations. Wieckowski is in town and joins the team immediately.

The third year center from Ottawa, has appeared in five games this season with the Grrrowl, recording one goal and one assist. Last year he played with the Long Beach Ice Dogs, where he notched seven goals and 22 points in just 32 games, missing time with a broken arm. He graduated in 2002 from Cornell University, where he spent four years as a member of the Big Red.

Wieckowski will make his Condors debut this Saturday on Teddy Bear Toss night against Victoria. He is expected to replace Mike Hofstrand in the lineup, who is sidelined with a sports hernia and may miss over a month if surgery is deemed necessary. Hofstrand is tied for second on the team with 11 points this season.

"Given the extent of Mike Hofstrand's injury, we expect to lose him for over a month," said Head Coach Marty Raymond. "We needed a similar type of player and we liked Krzysztof last year when he was in Long Beach. He was headed to the All-Star Game when he went down, and he's a great skater and a character kid."

Additionally, the Condors placed RW Todd Alexander on the 7-day IR on Friday. The second year winger has a concussion resulting from a cross check by Billy Tibbetts against the Las Vegas Wranglers on Thursday night. Also leaving that game early was G Randy Petruk, whose leg injury he suffered has also landed him on the 7-day IR on Saturday. Andrew Zoppo will serve as the team's emergency back-up goaltender while Petruk is on IR. Zoppo was an All-American at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire and now serves as the director at the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center.

The Condors will play a pair of games after the Thanksgiving holiday, on Saturday at home and Sunday in San Diego. Saturday's match against Victoria is the famous Teddy Bear Toss, sponsored by 29 Eyewitness News, KERN News Talk 1410 and Wells Fargo Bank. Everyone is encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to the game, and when the Condors score their first goal of the night throw them on the ice. They will be collected by the United Way and distributed to children in need throughout the holiday season. In addition, Wells Fargo will donate an additional 1,000 Plush Ponies to the cause, and anyone interested in obtaining one can contact any local Wells Fargo branch.
