Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Amerks

BINGHAMTON - Mackenzie Blackwood put aside 33 shots, but it wasn't enough as the Rochester Americans held on to a late surge to defeat the Binghamton Devils, 4-3, in front of 3,447 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night.

After no scoring in the first period, Zach Redmond scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season to put the Americans on the board in the second. Victor Olofsson found Redmond in the right wing circle and his snap shot beat goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood at 8:19 with assists from Olofsson and Justin Bailey.

Binghamton answered back with a power-play goal to tie the game at one. Brandon Gignac fed Nick Lappin below the goal line and he found Blake Pietila who lifted the shot over a diving Scott Wedgewood in net for his seventh of the year and third goal in as many games. Pietila's power-play tally tied the game, 1-1, at 10:39 of the middle period.

Late in the first, Kevin Porter gave the Americans their second lead of the night, 2-1. Alexander Nylander found Porter in the hash marks and his wrister beat Blackwood with just 0:31 left in the frame. The goal was Porter's fifth of the year with assists to Nylander and Dalton Smith and Rochester took a one-goal lead into the third.

Wayne Simpson put the Americans up by two goals 7:41 into the third as he beat Blackwood for his sixth goal of the season with assists from CJ Smith and Jack Dougherty.

A wild play pulled the Devils within a goal, 3-2, with 9:29 left in the game. Blake Speers' chance went off the inside of the left post and sat in the crease where players though the play was dead. Josh Jacobs stepped up and tapped in the loose puck in the crease with assists from Speers and Egor Sharangovich.

As Blackwood sat on the bench for the extra attacker, Nylander added an ampty-net-goal for a 4-2, unassisted, with 1:59 to go in the game. Sharangovich then pulled the Devils back within a single goal just 0:42 later, however, the Americans held on for the 4-3 win.
