Stockton Spoils Homestand Finale
November 24, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
San Diego concluded a season-long five-game homestand with a 6-5 loss to the Stockton Heat.
Giovanni Fiore netted his fifth goal of the season (5-3=8) to open the scoring at 2:22 of the first period. Fiore has collected four points his last four games (2-2=4). Ben Thomson registered his fifth point of the season and Deven Sideroff tallied his fifth assist on the goal.
Corey Tropp matched a career high with his first three-point game of the season, scoring two goals and earning an assist (2-1=3). It marked his second multi-goal game his last three games, scoring four goals in that span (4-1=5). He has recorded 5-3=8 points his last seven games, and leads San Diego in scoring (6-11=17) and assists this season. The three points tied a career high for Tropp, the 10th time of his career doing so (last: Jan. 3, 2018 at Texas; 3-0=3).
Sam Steel collected a career high three points (2-1=3), his first multi-goal and multi-point game. Steel scored two goals 30 seconds apart in the second period and added an assist on Tropp's first goal to extend his point streak to four games dating to Nov. 10 (3-3=6). Steel also has four points his last two games (3-1=4).
Joseph Blandisi also recorded an assist on the first Tropp goal and is also riding a four-game point and assist streak (0-4=4).
Troy Terry extended his club record and AHL-leading point streak to 11 games with an assist on Tropp's second goal. Terry has recorded a point in all 11 career AHL games (7-9=16) since his debut on Oct. 19, including all nine home games (7-7=14). Terry's point streak is the longest by an AHL rookie since Evgeny Svechnikov (Grand Rapids) recorded a 12-game point streak from Jan. 20-Feb. 17, 2017 (5-9=14).
Andy Welinski recorded his sixth point (2-4=6) of the season with an assist.
Luke Schenn earned his first AHL point (assist) on the second Steel goal. Chase De Leo also tallied an assist on the goal, his ninth point of 2018-19 (4-5=9).
Jared Coreau made 26 saves in the setback. Coreau stopped his second career penalty shot at 15:09 of the second period, denying Curtis Lazar's attempt. Coreau has stopped two penalty shots this season (also Oct. 26 vs. Stockton; no goal), and has faced four in his AHL career (2-for-2).
San Diego goaltenders have faced three penalty shot attempts this season, a season high, with each of the three unsuccessful. In the seven all-time penalty shot attempts, the Gulls have held stopped 5-of-7 attempts to hold opponents to a 28.6 percent success rate.
Tonight's attendance was 8,004. The Gulls tonight welcomed their one millionth fan in the club's 112th game. All-time, the Gulls have welcomed 1,002,784 fans to Valley View Casino Center dating the inaugural 2015-16 AHL season. San Diego has averaged 8,953 fans per game in its history.
San Diego leads the AHL in attendance this season (8,968 average) and has led the Pacific Division in attendance each of the past three seasons. San Diego led the AHL in attendance in 2017-18 (9,305 average), the first team in 12 seasons to usurp the Hershey Bears in attendance.
The Gulls will conclude the home-and-home matchup against the Heat on Sunday, Nov. 25 at Stockton Arena (7 p.m.).

On the game
It's unfortunate, you have to find a way to close out those games. It's a learning experience, but those are crucial points to give up two games in a row. We have to find a way to finish games out when we have a two-goal lead. We have to get the job done, we have the game plan. It's no secret formula on what we have to do, we just have to execute.
On facing Stockton Sunday
It's what we get paid to do. Play, execute to the best of our abilities and get the job done. It's going to sink in here, we'll have a day think about, make some adjustments and we'll have another crack at it on Sunday.
Head Coach Dallas Eakins
On the game
I thought there were great stretches in the third period where we played very, very well. To lose a game like that, with a guy catching an edge and going down, I don't even know if it's a mistake. It's an unfortunate event.
On losing leads in back-to-back games
They are totally separate for me. In the first game we had the lead right away in the first period and we accepted the game coming to us. Tonight when we got the lead, I thought we controlled the play a lot of the time and we were pressing. We weren't able to finish or we could have had a three or four goal lead. To have them even it up like that and then to lose when we have got a power play, our power play has been so good this year, I was licking my chops on the bench going, we're going to win it right here. If we don't do it right now, we're definitely going to get it on the four-on-three (in overtime). We made an honest mistake down low on the power play and then a guy just caught on edge. There's not much you can do about that.
On facing Stockton on Sunday
I'm a big believer in playing a lot whether you have gone through an event like tonight to get right back at it or when you're winning, it's good to keep that rolling, too. I'm excited our schedule is going to pick up here.
On maintaining leads
It's more of a mindset than anything. You're not going to change your systems when you have a lead because, when you think about it, why would you do that? You have played a certain way to get a lead, why would you change? It's a human nature thing to back off and protect. We don't want that mindset.
On Corey Tropp and Sam Steel
They're starting to find some chemistry together. We've had them together for a number of games now and I think they are really starting to understand where the other is going to be. They've got a similar set of values in their games and they've been complimenting each other well.
