Laval Rocket News Release
CHARLOTTE - In the first of two games against one another at the Bojangles' Coliseum this weekend, the Charlotte Checkers defeated the Laval Rocket 4-2 in a game that saw Michal Moravcik score his first goal as a member of the Laval Rocket.
Three goals between Laval and Charlotte made for an exciting first period that ended with the shots favouring the first place overall Checkers 10-6 and the score favouring them 2-1 as well. Although Laval was down 2-0 fairly early, Joël Bouchard's troops rallied together to reduce the deficit by period's end as Moravcik netted his first of the season with a shot from the point that snuck by Charlotte goaltender Alex Nedelijkovic, who was screened on the play.
Rocket captain Byron Froese tied the game just 3:54 into the second period with his sixth of the year that he backhanded behind Nedelijkovic after the puck deflected off of a defenseman's leg and onto his stick, but Jake Bean wristed Charlotte's third of the game behind Lindgren less than two minutes later to reclaim their lead. In the final two minutes of the period, Aleksi Saarela added a power play goal for the Checkers to make it 4-2 after two.
Lindgren gave his team a chance to fight back in the third as he turned away all seven of Charlotte's shots in the final twenty minutes, but unfortunately for him and his team, Nedelijkovic also thwarted all of his opponent's chances. The scoreless period locked in the final score of 4-2 for the two teams, who will see each other again tomorrow at one o' clock.
"The story of the game is that we played one of the best teams in the league and we didn't come out the way we should have," explained Bouchard after the game. "We fought back into the game, but you can't have a slow start against a good team like that."
